what do you think?

I have been considering purchasing in the future (sometime this year) a pair of dogs to guard the family, and property for awhile now, and was curious about others experiences with guard or protection dogs. I would appreciate all informed opinions on the matter. The main use of the dogs will to be patrolling the land, and keeping any would be less than savory people off the land or stopping them in their tracks (lethal force if needed) if the occasion should arise. I have a small child and we are considering having another so the breed needs to be accepting of children and family oriented type breed with a brain, and level head. Obviously also needs to have enough power to effeciently stop a man, and preferably not a huge lethargic mastiff type breed. Any and all intelligent responses are very much appreciated, and will be seriously considered. Let's hear the bad and good experiences if possible.

 

this is something which i actually now something about frist hand ive just texted someone who has bein into guard dogs for quiet awhile exactly what u posted and he recons the kerry blue or doberman are the dogs with most shear dedication to being a guard dog im guessing he means will patrol the land and then he said you get the rottweiller which will defend the land just as good but will not dedicate to this alone and will need to be petted everyday etc with this said im not sure if kerryblues are avabile in the usa
and all these points i myself back up as ive seen his kerryblues and work with him on the land during the summer

 

I would just get a dozen Guinea fowl. Pen them for 3 months, then turn them out.
For dogs-Great Pyrenees would be up there

 

the exact repley i got was .. you"ve seen my kerryblue "joe" at work i had a doberman 4 years ago there good dogs aswell but was recommened the blue by shane.b and wont get another breed they simply need feeding and the odd trim everynow and again but they"ll happly walk up and down the fields waiting for someone its mad its like the dobermans in the films ,lol the rottweillers a good dog to but is more of a fear factor and idk i just dont like them as a guard dog even though there the most recommened ,,, and the rest was just hows u laely etc

 

Guinea fowl are already present, good sir, I like them very much along with the chickens.

 

Great Pyrenees same sorth of thing as the kerry blue they guard by instinct ive never seen one in ireland or read up much about them but ya there meant to be a very good dog and very gentle to those who they protect

 

lol thats funny..Geese are protective I know..friend got 2 and you dont want to get out of the car if he has them out of the pen them fuckers hurt..dont like strangers..

 

An aunt of mine had a few great pyrenees some years ago, and they were exceptional dogs at what they did....just not sure they are best suited for the texas climate. Meant to include this in the last post just didn't get to it quickly enough if it could be edited into my last post it would be appreciated.

 

or the cane corso there between 60-70 cms and are a good guard dog but theres alot of work needed into getting them to be nothing but a guard dog be ideal if ur looking for a guard dog/pet

 

Far as dogs I got lucky ..I got a mut half austarilian shepard and half heinz 57..wont let anyone out of thier car or truck unless I am there.He has sent one person the hospital for stitches.I have also used German Shepards..I had good luck with German Shepards.

 

the caucasian shepherd ( i think thats how its spelt) is the dog that jumps to mind ive heard there the most flexiable guard dog interms of being able to adopt to climates but apparently they can become aggserivse to those there not 100% fimalir with and are weary of all strangers needless of ur presence which u can look at as a good thing or bad thing

i was posting what is helpfull info but sure look there abousatly no need for that there im sure if u look around you"ll see every dog ive posted is a proven guard dog

Only bad thing about owning a dog that will get the job done is you have some crazy people man.I mean 95 percent of the people who pull in my yard wont get out after they see my mut guard dog ,he displays all the signs that he will bite..But yet you have the 5 percent that just dont see the signs and thier the ones that get bit or chased up tree's.

 

I asked for informed or experienced opinions and suggestions not for some moron to babble shit I along with millions of others have already read or know.

 

Rotties are good attack dogs, but for guard work, I would go for a larger Dobie (100+ pound males). Very active, good eye sight, very trainable, loyal, loud bark, and no one is going to out run one, if they ever have to give chase!

 

Thank you, Icepick I do like rotts and dobies very much and have been on the list of serious consideration along with boxers if I could find good working ones for a reasonable price.

 

has anyone here ever tried the dogo as a guard dog ?
