How old should a dog be when you start training it with weights

I start mine at Drag weight (very light) 6 months, 9 months -12 months (heavier depending on the dog). Also cart pulling on dirt, rails, etc. depending on your set-up.
Start as a puppy with a puppy harness with a little light weight chain, so the pup gets use to the harness and something dragging behind them. Not too much just a little to get them use to a harness.

Maybe get the harness on at 4-6 weeks but adding weight at that age will do damage later on in life now that's a fact for ya .....I think the earlyer the better to get them in the harness but let them develop befor u add weight

last i knew of Eddie won at 12 nationals a feat i believe that has not been equaled to this day i believe. if he had not been killed who knows how many he would have won- Dan

  8. The op mentions weights, at 4 to 6 weeks it`s a puppy harness and foot of noisey chain or a milk jug- eh, maybe if you really know what you`re talkin about, but not for the beginner. A healthy, solid jointed 14 month old dog will pull the shht outta some weight and train hard and make you proud. Why risk hurting your pal?

Are you fucking high??? You don't put a WP harness or any weights on a pup at 4-6 weeks old number one the pup's are barely on solid food, 2 the pups haven't had all their shots yet, 3 they are pups! let them be pups! You have all the time in the world for everything else. After a pup has had all it's shot's I say around 6 months old you can get the pup used to being a WP harness and then add the milk jugs but NO weight until the pup is at least a year old and some won't even start adding weight until they are 18 months old. But 4-6 weeks old is WAY to young I don't care how many WP Nationals Eddie won if he put his pup's in harnesses at 4 - 6 weeks old he's a fucking idiot and I doubt he did that. Hell I don't know a pup who could fit in a WP harness at that age.

my thoughts exactly.... but hey, im no eddington, my dogs just pull the kids' sled around in the snow LOL

  11. Actually the hardcore weight pullers almost all have tiny puppy harnesses that they put on puppies that small. There is NO WEIGHT attached. It's just imprinting onto the pup that the harness is part of it. It makes it a natural thing when it's time to start adding little things for them to pull around. Check with the harness makers. It's actually very common.

  12. They weren't pulling.......they were just wearing harnesses. They weren't learning to pull. They were learning to wear a harness.

LOL I take your word for it boogie but what about them being on the ground at 4-6 weeks old? Even in a harness I wouldn't personally want any of my pups on the ground until they were fully vaccinated but that's just me....

That makes more sense than putting them in a harness that little and then attaching things to it. Thanks for clearing it up...

  15. I let my pups run around the back yard around 6 weeks old

  16. Lee, I couldn`t agree more; my kids love getting a free sled ride from the dog. My current pup is just turning 11months now, so she`ll be ready to take her turn pulling the snow sled this winter :)

  17. And Sadie, I agree, I ain`t putting my dog in a wp harness till it can fill a wp harness.

Imprinting a puppy to wear a harness is a good idea.
And the late Edgar Eddington was a hell of a weight puller.
But those weren't APBT's he was pulling that big red dog he pulled was a BANDOG, Chevelle.
Oliver Dela Cruz of 5150 Dungeon Kennels out here in Cali brought that dog.
But that's another topic, 100 lb APBT's. I even had me a 108lb. ADBA/UKC registered so called APBT (really a Bandog) but I wanted to pull him with the other 100 and above so called Pits out here in CALI =)
