LAKE COUNTY, Fla. - Lake County Sheriff's Office deputies shot and killed a man they assumed was an attempted murder suspect on Sunday, but they now know they shot the wrong man.

In the early-morning hours, deputies knocked on 26-year-old Andrew Lee Scott's door without identifying themselves as law enforcement officers. Scott answered the door with a gun in his hand.

"When we knocked on the door, the door opened and the occupant of that apartment was pointing a gun at deputies, and that's when we opened fire and killed him," Lt. John Herrell said. "Even though this subject is not the one we were looking for when he opened the door. He was pointing the gun at the deputy and if you put yourselves in the deputy's shoes. They were there to pick up someone who was wanted for an attempted homicide."

Officials said the deputies did not identify themselves because of safety reasons.

Deputies thought they were confronting Jonathan Brown, a man accused of attempted murder. Brown was spotted at the Blueberry Hills Apartment complex and his motorcycle was parked across from Andrew Scott's front door.

"It's just a bizarre set of circumstances. The bottom line is, you point a gun at a deputy sheriff or police office, you're going to get shot," Herrell said.

disgusting...they will get a slap on the wrist, some paid time off and it will be swept under the rug.
i know if someone busts my door down in the middle of the night and doesnt id themselves as LE, theyll get the same treatment...
a gun in the face. correct me if im wrong, but we are still allowed to defend our families from potential threats, arent we? and since when do cops NOT id themselves "for safety reasons"? arent they supposed to be ok with putting themselves in danger for the safety of others?

the bottom line is a person has no safety from LEOs in their own home. If the guy shot one of the cops he'd be arested and tried for murder, the cops kill him and they blame him for defending himself in his own home against unidentified assailants. Am I the only one tired of the double standard?

"Am I the only one tired of the double standard" nope you aint alone at all. this shit is totaly fucked up and theres more to this. i doubt the fella even had a gun at the door. the cops prolly planted after they shot the fella. theres more to this then a simple knock knock blast.

I'm real tired of it,like you said had he shot one of them he'd of been tried, convicted and executed.Cops need to make sure they have the right address and right guy,and they need to ID themselves as LE.I've answered to door with a gun different times and that's if they knock,if someone would just bust in,they're getting greeting with shots being fired. And unlike most,I'm about as well armed as the cops are :-) This is really just a pathetic example of the cops stupidity. They seen the motorcycle, why didn't they get him when he was spotted except they probably wanted to make sure they had a dozen more cops there first.Or they could've waited for him to come back out. If I accidently kill someone,it's manslaughter, cops do it,paid vacation.

  6. Police are trained and paid to protect people, and that`s why it`s MORE the LEO`s fault even though the homeowner wasn`t acting too brightly either. Did he just assume his gun would scare an assailant away? Always identify your target, this can be done without revealing yourself and without marching out your own front door pointing your gun at the first person you see. FTP, but dude pretty much asked for it this time IMO.

isnt part of their training to properly identify themselves in a situation like this? its would seem that would protect them from being misidentified as a badguy. and how do you figure he wasnt acting to bright? its a proven fact that guns do scare away assailants (look up how many crimes are prevented anually by simply showing your firearm... telling the badguy you have no intentions to be a victim), and if it didnt scare the badguy, id rather have a gun in hand if im gonna be in a sd scenario vs in my bedroom closet. he never fired a round at the LE, so hed either NOT properly identified his target, was caught completely off guard, or wasnt even given a chance...as if the LE went in with all intentions of shooting first and asking questions later. he didnt ask for shit...he was simply trying to defend what was his. nothing wrong with that imo. id have done the same, only theyd have been met with alot more firepower than just a handgun.

it's your damn home not theirs . you need to identify yourself . these cops are lying and they know it . i've had cops do stupid thing to me . i'm just lucky they never pulled the trigger . and i never been in trouble . but they have come to my house and pointed pistols at me for no reason . 1 just told me if i move he would shoot me . hell i was in my own house . and they said sorry at the end and went away . what if they shot me . NEVER OPEN THE DOOR TO POLICE . ALWAY TALK THROUGH IT . NEVER GO OUTSIDE . JUST TALK THROUGH THE WINDOW TO THEM .

  9. someone knocks on my door, do I ask `whose there?` or do I shove a gun in their face? Someone breaking into your house can come with INTENT for confrontation, (knocking on the door hardly qualifies as B&E btw) and so may actually be prepared for your pistol jesturing. Just sayin, dude made some poor choices that night, the cops certainly made worse simply because they knew better.

in the wee hours of the night you come to the door unarmed and ask "whos there?"...fuck no. late night knocks usually means trouble is a coming. maybe im paranoid... i sleep with a loaded Beretta 92 and a flashlight beside my bed, a tricked out "bump in the night" Mini-14 (equipped with a weapon light and a red dot mounted on it) hanging on the wall above my headboard, with a 20rd mag loaded and snapped in, as well as an 870 stuffed full of 00 Buckshot in the corner. i sure as hell dont believe we live in the land of rainbows and pixie dust. i live for no other reason than to protect my family...thats what daddys do.... and its a shame that man had to lose his life doing what he felt he needed to do to protect what was his.

It's the man's house he can answer the door anyway he wants. The cops never announced themselves as LE,he had no idea who it was and i'm sure wasn't expecting cops. I've answered the door before in the middle of the night gun first.

  16. Sickening. The double standard with these scumbags is really getting out of control. If you go have a few drinks and get pulled over, your public enemy number 1. These scumbags drink there nights away. Go home and roid rage on the old lady and its business as usual.

meanwhile decades ago the Lautenburgh(sp) Act made it illegal for any citizen who was convicted of domestic abuse wheteher it was yesterday, or 30 years ago unable to own a firearm ever again. and NO im not for hitting on a woman, but we all know you can get charged and convicted of domestic WITHOUT laying a hand on your wife.... i felt that seemed just a bit excessive. no hunting, no recreational shooting, and no right to protect yourself simply based of a mistake you made years and years ago.

this story has caused me to read up a little on various definitions of murder 1, 2 or 3, and while I'm no lawyer it sure seems to apply, and if not then manslaughter may fit depending on the jurisdiction, especially if you take away the badges which the story suggests the victim didn't know they were cops. The cops made bad decisions and a guy died. If drunk drivers can be locked up for killing someone then these cops should face criminal consequences for their bad decisions that resulted in a death as well. Like most stories more details may emerge that changes my view on this but as it stands now these cops killed the wrong guy at his own front door out of sheer negligence.

  19. Like was said earlier, we all know how this is going to go down. The cop will be back at the office making his 90k a year off the tax payers. Sickening. No end in site either.

  20. All Im saying is, be it cops, thugs, grandma or armed terrorists outside, you dont just walk out into the line of fire with your gun like that, its plain ol stupid. Dude F`d up big time, how do I know? Cause he`s friggin dead! I love the `talk through the door/window` plan, unless you`re bullet proof or plain crazy. Self preservation my friends, common sense.
