It's gonna take time money agruements and good dogs not good pedigrees. I see a lot of guys buy up pretty papered hounds only to be disappointed in a couple years. My advice is to start small buy a brood gyp pay a stud fee and keep as many pups as you can if your heart is in the right place and you can take disappointment then you might be alright. Having a yard is hard work and a sacrifice trust me if you have a wife you will hear "You love them dogs more than me" any xtra money I have to goes to the dogs collars chains food bones. Shoveling paths for the dogs when there two feet of snow or keeping water fresh when its freezing out. That's what having a yard is about so best of luck. Yis Ole Man

When you start off with someone elses dogs your not going to get dogs that are perfect and fit into your program,it takes time to develop what you like through selective breeding and culling. Now if you have developed friendships with dogmen then you have a pretty good idea what thier dogs are about and what u need from what dogs.OP says he has been around a good dogmen so he shouldnt be on here seeking advice thats for sure.

  3. A good dogman told me, its not what youre breeding, rather who's breeding it and why? I know where my yard will start, thanks for all the input.

I will start with what type of dogs. How i would set up my dog in kennels or a chain or runner. And also to be honest with people. Be honest all the time but if the play u dirty then just dont deal with them cuz i been thought that situation before were they sold me a fake ped dog so i went to his house and kicked his ass and i still got my dog but thats not the point lol so just be honest to other people in the dog game and enjoy the hobby u like the seller and buyer.

  5. Sounds to me that things are still the same around here as when I took off for a while. A newbie comes here and proclaims how he is going to start his yard. He then makes an idiotic post so others with give there opinions on what is better. I'm waiting to here the next question being where you live and name your friends that have dogs in your area. Brilliant.

Whatever you do don't take advice from anyone online LOL ... Get a mentor if you can find one you will make mistakes that's part of learning learn from those mistakes. The longer you are around the breed the wiser you become. I don't know about starting a yard but getting a few good dogs to start off with seems like a good place to start.

How to start a yard.........Watch at least twenty shows in the field of your interest. When you see a flawless performance by a bitch, especially if she overcomes great obstacles in delivering that flawless performance, pull the cash out and buy her. Take her pedigree with a grain of salt and get her totally healthy and pay the stud fee to the finest performing male you have seen with your OWN eyes, or to his father if you are CERTAIN of his parentage. Keep every, EVERY pup out of the breeding and train them through your endeavor of choice, holding them to the same standards as the parents. Identify the best of your offspring and repeat. Your odds should go up every generation, if not step back one generation and find the best YOUR OWN eyes have seen and PAY THE PRICE to breed or buy into those genetics. Let the contest of your choice determine the worth of your blood. That is a proper way to start a dog yard, they will be YOUR dogs, not the continuation of paper pedigrees of how you think ol' (insert the famous name of your hero) would have bred them.
..... an attempt at an honest answer that I have seen work with my own eyes.....

That is a very good answer. However some people choose to run or continue a existing line because they like that line of bulldawgs. I think that would be easier for someone just entering the scene because of the outcrossing and lack of contacts at the beginning. Even running a existing line you can tweek it to your liking. But that is a great answer. Either way at some point you will have to learn to read a pedigree and understand genetics or what the different breedings are (Inbreeding/Line breeding/Scatter bred) so your just not scattered all over the place. Because that is no line at all. Thats a little of this and a little of that here and there. Its alot of dedication and hard work...physically...mentally and emotionally. And dont forget financially lol. But the juice is worth the squeeze if its in your heart to better the breed. You must have a reason to be breeding...not just to collect some mula because that is the wrong reason. Truth is...your lucky if you break even. And please...dont just sell to any Joe Blow. Thats how the breed gets watered down after you have spent blood sweat and tears to better it. Strive for that breed standard every time. The guy above gave some good advice. Hopefully you can take something from everyone that replies and apply it.

  17. wow that was the best advice. you cannot ask for better. Thank you Bobm. i was raised into bulldogs and i feel like ive just learned something.seriously looking forward to reading more of you posts.
