It's 100% your fault, you didn't have control of your dog and Biking with one of these dogs is not an easy task when your in an enviorment where you WILL come in contact with other animals, leashed or unleashed. I feel for you having loss your dog and all but legally (here in pa anyways) your at fault, the only thing I can see the neighbor is guilty of is discharging a firearm with in city limits.
We just had a cop here shoot a Pit Bull running loose chasing after it's neighbors cat and the cop shot it dead. The reality is, If I owned a different breed of dog and your dog was running loose after one of my dogs on my property (not having control of your dogs leash while out in public is the same thing as running loose), I would shoot it too. I would not take the chance as I don't know your dog and shit like this happens all the time, many times a person is bit too. If you own this breed of dog and don't take appropriate steps to ensure you dog will not be a threat to the public while out in public then your an asshole and get what happens. I love these dogs more than 98% of anything I am involved with in my life but a loose Pit Bull, gamebred or shitbred is potentially a very dangerous animal to anything with fur and alot of time people who do the dumbest shit to try to seperate them once they got what they wanted and end up getting bit too.... Hopefully, you learned a lesson in all this and won't ever allow it to happen again.

Only because this is the very reason the public hates these dogs and would like to exterminate them. It's not the dogs fault it's owner fails him yet the dog is the one to pay, with his life, for his owners mishap and every one of these types of threads, most times, the people are looking for sympathy for their poor judgment that ultimately makes these dogs more hated by people lurking on these sites and the people who witnessed this event.. I do feel bad for the guy to an extent but you reap what you sow.

lmao, even though I feel the way I feel about the situation, if it was one of my dogs I would have shot the guy and said self defense. He pulled a gun officer and started shooting towards me I shot back but not before he shot my dog in the blaze of gun fire lol... But then again, I wouldn't put myself or one of my dogs in that position to begin with.....

accidents happen & it sucks you lost your dog. i doubt there's much to do because it's a lunatic pit bull & there "dangerous" breed. that's how the judge will see it.

Personally if it were me I wouldn't bike with an Apbt in a neighboorhood where you are bound to run into someone walking their dog or worse a loose dog. I am sorry for your loss you did state you knew the neighbors dogs were always getting loose that was a warning sign right there. You live and learn I personally would never shoot someone's dog even if it was on my property unless it was attacking my kid or another human being there are better ways to handle situations like this. But not everyone is going to be as nice and understanding and you own a breed of dog that is known to be dog aggressive therefore you should be responsible at all times and go the extra mile to take precautions no one else will protect your dog the way you will these dogs can't help it they are only doing what they were bred to do so you gotta stop them by not giving them the opportunity to even start. You have to accept some blame here for what happened and it's horrible that you had to loose your dog to learn this lesson but next time I am sure you will not make the same mistake . I am very sorry for your loss I would be heartbroken if I lost one of my dogs this way.

I think riding a bike no matter how good you think you have control of them is a very bad idea . there's nothing you can do about what happened unless you want more trouble . sorry

    Sorry for your loss brother!
Some of you on here are a little to brutal. He just lost his dog that he may have been really close to. I am sure he knows it is his fault the leash slipped out of his hand.
But he was right behind his dog to grab him before the neighbor shot him according to him. That right there would make me a real dangerous neighbor at this point.
Legally did the neighbor have a right to shot the dog on his property, obviously yes!
But did he really have to, I doubt it, but that is the question.
I would also like to know how large the other dog was. Was he so small he may have died from a single bite? Or was he large enough to protect himself for a short period. To me this is important as to the neighbors reaction, or over reaction. But to be ready with his fire arm to gun your dog down that quick, sounds like he was waiting for the opportunity.
If it was my neighbor he better have eyes in the back of his head from this day forward.

I guess my only issue here is he knows his neighbor lets their dogs run free that right there is enough for me to assess a situation and say ok if my dog gets loose my dog will take the hit for the type of dog it is biking in residential area with a bulldog is high risk and knowing you got a neighbor that has issues containing his dogs an even bigger hazzard zone. I really feel for this dude but you can't always point blame at the other person a lot of pitbull owners seem to do that when their dog does something bad when 9 times out if 10 it was probably the pitbull owners fault using bad judgement or lack of breed knowledge either way it's up to an owner to research before buying any breed of dog. Like I said I don't think the neighbor should have shot this guys dog but he saw a pitbull attacking his dog and reacted the way most non pitbull owners probably would.

And dayair1 we both know how hard these dogs can pull and let them see something they want you are holding on for dear life not an ideal situation to be on a bicycle having that powerful dog on a leash in a residential area with lots of dogs running around It's an easy situation for a leash slip you don't have total strength control over your body when your legs aren't touching the ground you are using half your strength to hold on to this powerful determined dog that can pull 100 times your weight lol and probably much more.

That was all I was tryin to say Sadie, you just sound sweater when you say lol it, but in the end, the breed suffers the most due to these very types of things that happens much to often so I apoligize to the OP for my insensitivity but the signs where there and you made a bad judgment bro, I am sorry you lost your hound and all, thats a horrible thing to have to go through due to a mistake, don't take what i said to personal even though I did come off as an insensitive prick... ;) I kind of am one....
