Curious how others would handle this situation...

I have an issue that seems to come up pretty often and I am curious as to how others handle it when it happens to them, this is particularly for the breeders.

Whenever I seem to run into old friends and family I always get asked If they can have a dog from me. When I politely tell them no usually followed by the responce, " If your kid wanted a pony you wouldnt run out and buy them a thouroghbred race horse would you?". I wanted to see what others would say or do say when asked for a dog/pup by someone close to them that they feel could not handle such an animal. I almost always am made out to be the asshole when turning people down even though I try to be as polite as I can with telling them no and the reasoning as to why. These folks almost immediately get upset without realizing that to me, the well being of my dogs far out weighs their opinion. I need a better responce to give that maybe wont offend folks so much. Lol the bigger part of it makes me really not give 2 shits about what they think however I do sometimes feel bad when I tell folks no, especially my family. I am curious how others handle this kind of situation when it arrises.

Just tell them they are working dogs and not breed to be pets. If I come across someone trying to sell non working dogs I'll get you one.

I was at a funeral yesterday when my cousin and his wife aproached me and asked for a pup. Nice timing right? When I said I dont sell to pet homes as they are too much dog for most to want to deal with, they get this look of offense. My cousins wife was like, all those dogs you have and pups you cant just give us one. Now im the one actually offended lol I only do maybe one or 2 breedings in house every year or so. Anyways, i try to explain and people just dont get it.

Easiest way is just tell them you don't breed dogs.if someone finds out just say they are spoken for.

Normally I would however This cousin and I are pretty close and due to some unfortantate history a few years back, my whole family knows I got dogs. Especially the ones I hang out with on the occassion. Seems like everytime they are over here Theres a litter of pups here or pups Ive kept from litters. Im ok with just saying No just want to hear others expierences with this.

Well most of my family members know what type of dogs I got. I have had a few "friends" feel that I should give them a pup. Most times I'll brush it off the first time. Second time I talk to them about how serious I am about the upkeep of the dogs and the responsibilities and dangers of owning such an animal. If they ask a third time then I'll tell them ok I will consider it but this is what you must do first. Then I go off into making sure you fence your property, buying all the hardware needed for a chai spot, doghouse, a Vet fund, high quality kibble, etc etc...... If none of this turns them off then I say cool, I'll let you know when I have a litter ready. And I never speak of it again. If they continue I'll say ok next litter I'll sell you a pup, and I tell them an absurd price like $1000. Then they say that's too high I know so and so that sells them for X amount.... Well go get one from so and so! And that's normally the end of it. But sometimes you will be looked at as the asshole because people can't understand why we wouldn't just give dogs away when one has so many. Lmao I got a great uncle that owns a used car lot..... He tells me one day that his daughter likes red nose dogs and that he has heard I've got two yards full so I should give him one to take back to Louisiana...... Well I was like sure I've got about as many dog as you do cars.... Let's make a swap..... When I put it in those terms he agreed that if he ever wanted a dog from me he bring some money with him cause he'd expect the same if I came to his lot.

Tell them it's a hobby and u don't want to part any of your dogs. When you tell somebody that they are incompetent even in a nice way they will think ur an ass. Just say no and its understood even if they don't like it, no need to offend anyone especially ur family.

Well sometimes your gonna offend people, if someone gets offended because their told the truth that they probably shouldn't own these dogs then that's a personal prob. A good dose of reality is what a lot of people need

How many times u give someone a dose of reality and they turn around and change? I mean you see people in here live in denial all day long.. Just make up some story about how u can't part one and call it a day especially if you close to this family member.

  10. Tell them there are inherent dangers to owning a battle dog so to speak suggest a beagle there great with kids

    AGK,

I get this from time to time as well. I've found it best just to tell them that I don't have anything availiable for them. I try not to get into the reasons why I don't want them to have one, because it is never understood on their part, and I also get the feeling like I'm the bad guy in their eyes. I am far too jaded anymore about letting just anyone get any of my dogs. If I have even the slightest feeling that the dogs will be put into a compromising position, they stay with me.
I hardly ever breed my dogs anymore, and when I do, it is for me and select others. So, I really am not lying to anyone when I say that they are simply not availiable to them.

I used to get asked all the time. Most cases I would just givem a dog. Plain and simple. Its a dog not a piece of gold. Of course you have to practice good judgement on the individual askin. In most cases it worked out for best in my experiences. jmo

Your right, they arent gold however, I care enough about their future well being to not put them in hands I dont feel are capable of raising one. Theres a big reason why I dont place dogs in pet homes and the last thing I want to do is see one of my own on the front pages being PTS because it was allowed to roam or the person just couldnt handle the animal. This person actually said to me when I told him this pup will grow up and kill his other 2 dogs, as well as the cats as sure as the night is dark, and his reply was I'll just get rid of them. Now to me, if you can get rid of animals youve had for years as pets for one puppy then whats going to happen to the one i give you when it fucks your apartment up the first time or 10 or does something else undesirable. I would just rather not place dogs with people with that mentality.
