I'm planning on building several above ground pens over the next few months. I have my design, material list, sources, etc the only thing I'm not sure on is how to "weather proof" the lumber.

Should I water seal it, stain it, paint it, leave the treated lumber exposed(I know the debates and I settled on it being safe)?

With All pressure treated wood, you should be fine! Only task would be to keep them from chewing#lol

Toss in a kong and make sure they get out for plenty of exercise every day and usually it keeps chewer at bay.

Mine are overboard 10 x 10. I used 2x6 frames and 2x10's as the decking. Didn't stain it but this year I'm going to.

I'm a use PPG Cedar stain from Spectrum Paint co.

Ours are small 3x3x6 with a 2x3 whelp house attached. Mainly for summer litters, single pups, sick/healing adults. We are gonna use poultry flooring and cut goat panels for the fencing.

I'l frame one out and post pics this weekend.

I am in no way a carpenter but I did this by myself in a couple hours with just a cordless drill and saw. I'm about $160 in it right now before poultry flooring and fencing. I'm going to paint it also strictly for ascetic reasons.

That ones is basic as basic gets. I can pm you the basics for these exact ones if you want.

If you're located around a lot of beagles or coon dogsyou can usually find some on Craigslist. They have some listed on feds online in the TX area.

Pitbull bible has plans for an ok one.

There's a thread around here with a slew of them you can jack plans from.

In the southwest you could add a misting system and/or put a fan on the gate. Luckily mine have a natural 3 side wind break and plenty of shade so I would only need a fan at most.

We planned on possibly adding heating pads or maybe lamps for winter pups also.

It really wasn't bad. I made them do most the cutting at Lowe's. I just had to trim a few things and run a drill. It is heavy as a sumbitch though. I framed out the sides them moved them. I should've just built them where I wanted them lol. I did the whole thing while my lady took a midday nap. Not bad at all and I'm not a handyman at all. This and dog houses is about the extent of my building skills lol. It would've been much easier to do with a spare hand or 3 but I managed and wouldn't shy away from building others without help.

  16. Ha,ha lol.building dog houses is easier then it looks!....I've built six dog houses in the last three years.ok so your probably thinking why?(no!not six dogs lol.)I'll tell you why!.because I'm shit at making them!..lol maybe next time on my seventh go,they will look ok..but for now they look crooked, they don't leak.Wich is the main thing.but they look terrible lol........that dog house in your pen looks rather neat.mine look like a crooked one of yours.lol.........but yeah.good job!.......
