There was a well known story about jp getting one of his best dogs from Buck by swapping a radio for it.

i wonder how buck dogs would compare to the fell terrier of now a days.. he had the law on his side, unlike now , you could work badgers back then

  11. Those Wheeler types look strong, heard they are laid up abit ,no reverse, had a little black bitch ,broken coated, nothing like the physicality of the others I’ve had, most missed gamest little tyke I’ve had, murdered everything and didn’t change style for anything so laid up often, much missed, was out of Ireland, the man don’t court fame so can’t share a name on internet, but still has his stuff.Got some old history photos of Patterdales here somewhere, taken from others sharing historical information, try and find them.

  12. The Buck/Breay photos ,Tommy Dobson with some of his terriers on a rock pile,he had black terriers 100 years before Buck/Breay, and to prove that, this must be oldest pic I’ve ever seen of a smooth black Patterdale type.

Dont look too different from now adays terrier.. third pix some ugly workers lol

  14. Tommy Dobsen never had black terriers a hundred years before Brey and Buck.Dobsens terriers were more of the Bedlington in type..he out crossed to the Bedlington!-he was not around a hundred years before brey and buck-forty or fifty years before them not a hundred...

The name Patterdale is quite wrong. As these particular type of smooth coated bull headed tykes were developed towards Lancashire-while patterdale(a small village)is at the most northen point of the lake district.were the lakeland terrier originated....

  15. Cheers for the clarity Soze, new Tommy Dobson was before, passed away aged 85 in 1910,from what I've read, the first lines of smooth black stuff didnt appear till the early 1970s,but that black terriers were about long before, dont know much about that last photo but certainly what we call a Patterdale today.
Blackpoison,no different like you say of todays ugly workers.

I would say the other way around do to JP being the senior and going along for digs. DR has said not to care for hard terriers as some pictures i have seen where the terrier is missing the top of its head from a badger.

i think its the ninties where they call it the new nuttal blood, with miner being the start of the line and miner is quarter border terrier, brian reduced size of his dogs so he could sell to the USA folks who needed a smaller type then his old blood from 80s and prior which was bigger
