Anyone can utilize a keep. I just dont see where the men from the boys comes in to play.
I guess your saying whos willing to put the work in not who's able.
    I'm not seeing you point.
    Who's able in your opinion.
I could do 3 at a time. Every day. The pace is gonna be a little quicker[/QUOTE] Men from the boys is simple. Any Man that is completely dedicated to hand walk there Bulldog 20 miles a day is Not easy for the man or the Bulldog. Just that alone is a work out. Of course you're not going to start a dog at 10 miles in the a.m. in 10 miles in the p.m. most dog starting off the chain depending on the time of the year in the weather, might lay down on you after a couple of miles if that I'm speaking from experience. Not keep in mind all people aren't capable based on health purposes knees ankles hips backs what have you to do that. I have been there and done it. Historically speaking around the Carolina's on a 90 degree day at 90 % humidity, it's a Job. I have known locals who that's all they do is hand walk, along with Flirt & spring pole work, some chain dragging, proper nutrition, and bring home the bacon. You say that you can condition 3 Bulldogs at a time and get them Show Ready??? Lol.. Just out of curiosity, how many Bulldogs do you have? Also what lineage are you using? How long have you been around this worlds greatest breed?

I used to do lots of walking , but as you get older its hard to do , and Im sure it was some old guy who invented Catmills and treadmills ,,

Conditioning a few at the same time is possible.
    Did it on different occasions.
And yes it is an awefull lot of work.
Handwalking is a good way of exercise , and some do without, which is possible to, as there are many ways to get one in shape.
Using your common horse sense and dedication that's conditioning.

  6. This thing is way more complicated these days
Environment ( city or country side ) > u have people close by no way u gonna get a dog fit they will call the cops
Type of dogs ( lazy walkers no running tredmill ) depending on environment u need to choose your line

there is so much in consideration a keep is dependent on so much things @F.W.K. he could walk cause them patrick cunts had natural air
man some had a damn swimming pool , some have a catmill
funny thing is most keeps I see , the people that wrote it never had much in regards on winning consistently for 20 to 30 years
even if they did so much have changed in feeding , roids etc
man twenty years ago some fed corn flakes and loaded up on carb

  8. there is no way one can get the heart rate up with handwalking

theres better ways to utilize your time than handwalking, by the time someone has walked ten miles , i could have worked three dogs , fed and watered the rest , washed n' shaved and be sitting on a high stool.

It depends on the type of dog doing the hand walking. If he is walking by your knee then that type of walking can be long and sometimes not all that effective.

If the dog is dragging you down the road with your elbow locked out, and lead banjo string tight then that is very effective.

As far as heart rate goes, I have never really factored that in what I was doing. I tried to keep up with heart rate once but either it didn't get me or I didn't get it. Mostly because I was never that big of a fan of a free turning slat mill, not was I ever a fan of long treadmill runs at a trot or a fast walk.

I did three at a time once, and a couple times had a couple going but at different stages. It is hard. Couple that with a full time job that is 50 minutes away, a kid who after school played sports year around, with a house/wife....just not enough hours in the day.

Maybe the biggest factor is that I am really anal about watching the dogs when they work. I never take my eye off them. When I did multiple dogs I felt like I was or would be missing something along the way.

But again, many roads to the same destination.

Lol anyone who can walk a dog 20 miles a day probably don't have a job or a family. There just isn't enough hours in the day for all that. Way more efficient and less time consuming ways to bring one in.

Bob Stevens’ 1st book and some of his journal articles in the 90s got me started with exercising my dogs. Always thought he was innovative in regard to training and feeding the working and sporting canine. I still look at his stuff. Not sure if he’s still publishing.

My hat is off to those persistent long range, easy paced road workers out there. Whatever works works, but I think higher intensity interval training is more beneficial, cost effective overall...don’t think it hinders aerobic endurance either.

Every dog is an individual same as the handler. Study 50 different programs then create your own.

On a local level, any conditioning is going to serve one better than OTC. I will leave it at that...

    ^^^^^ STONGLY DISAGREE.....

To quote someone who's actually conditioned and done more than a few... "most ppl do a disservice to their dog trying to condition.. they'd do better just taking them off the chain and going". He was speaking about keeps like this, novices with no grasp on conditioning attempting, and these know everything done nothing folks who always have advice for others.

Mr. Stevens was well advance for his time. A few of his supplementation plans were and are world class. He touched on a lot of things that are still prevalent today.

Some of his stuff is dated (for the times) as when he wrote the book a lot of his nutrition principles were based on human performance and then placed on the canine.

I like higher intensity work myself. I try to get as many bursts as I can in a work out. All out blasts, measure their length, then recover, measure that and do it again. The idea is to get the bursts to last longer and longer and the recovery between them shorter and shorter.

I hand walk if the dog will drag me, me leaning back, so he is constant effort. If it is a dog that leisurely walks I do not have the time to walk him til that becomes effective. (nor the gas in my tank, LOL)

If one can figure out the dog he is working the rest somewhat falls into place.

Ofcourse and they were very effective. However,
These days who can have a Catmill on there property? I'm just a local country boy who has a hunting club walking distance from my property. 10 plus miles of Dirt roads ect. The old keep I posted was just that. I realize that folks live in the Big City and hand walking won't work. HOWEVER, This keep also has mill work ect. It's just an old keep that is a full time job Imo..

i want a dog working flat out for as long as it can, recover and repeat, hand walking doesnt compare.

  18. slim12

    slim12 Super Moderator Staff Member

It does not compare when compared against a burst with a flirt pole or a slat mill or a carpet mill. No doubts.

But what it does is set up those other exercises so they are far more effective in far less time.

I use hand walking to empty, create routine, provide some variety, but mostly to pre-work before the mill.

Like Dex said it may be enviroment as well. Where I live I can walk for miles if I choose to do so. I know some guys who do not have that as an option and I know guys who have it as an option but choose not to use it as a tool.

I like having a lot of tools in the shed.
