Depends on the dog and depends on the work load.

I usually start upping the fat content as the work starts. If the stool gets a little loose then let up on the fat.

When working hard I have fed dogs as mush as 50% to 60% of their daily ration as beef or chicken fat.

The energy level will go up and the recovery times will get better. No supplementation necessary.

Now if that dog is getting worked really hard there may be a need for supplements but for the most part a solid feed pan will be all the dog needs.

a little off topic but related, considering all the “advances” in canine nutrition, western veterinary medicine… do working dogs in 2020 live longer, pull the sled farther/faster, hunt gamer, dig deeper….or suffer less from congenital diseases than their canine counterparts 100, 200 or more years ago?

Brilliant - long lasting muscles, no exercise required.

Consider human health. Even with a stockpiled GNC, a new celebrity diet fad (high fat, low fat, no fat etc..) every other month seemingly, and slick fitness centers located in most strip malls across our US of A, Americans are obese and as unhealthy as ever, and suffer from a myriad of diseases triggered by lifestyle choices.

lmao there is no way to build muscle without some form of exercising, those bully food ads are pure lies. even veteran steroid users like Arnold had to exercise between 5 and 7 hours a day to gain massive muscle mass

Congenital diseases I would venture a guess to say they are up from times past, even with the advances in nutrition/medicine, the way and the reasons we breed dogs drives that number up. But that is just opinion, no factual evidence.

The sled dogs are pulling faster, I am not sure about further, but Iditarod times have been shaved in recent years. But, they have mostly reverted back to the way they were fed a thousand years ago. Really high fat content (whale blubber) and pretty much no carbohydrates. At some point we created dry food and placed the human nutritional needs on the dogs and set them back quite a bit. (Mushing Magazine, Rendering the Sense of Fats, Dr. Reynolds, a great article/great read)

As far as people with all the advances in nutrition the easiest thing to eat is usually the shittiest thing to eat. We no longer sweat for a living. Critical thinking is becoming a lost art.

We have the information and knowledge to live better and we simply choose to not do so.

    Babbling again.

Feed a good amount of quality feed, If you add supplements less is better than to much and exercise the dog. I have had better results dragging lighter chains for long distances than heavy for short. And one of the most overlooked things with conditioning a strong weight pull dog is WIND! A dog will get way stronger faster if he has the air to do the pulling. A dog can be very strong but if it doesn't have the air it wont be strong for long and wont be able to put the work in. In weight pull events lots of times its just my dog and one other left and your dogs have to pull one after the other and keep going up in weight until it cant make the 16' mark. I have had my dog stop 6'' short before not because he wasn't strong enough, because he didn't have enough air to make it.

Try a hide or something the dog likes on the end. Have you tried your dog on a flirt pull? Swimming is a great way to condition a dog and its easy on the joints.

you cant build such muscle on an APBT, the most you could do is something like this
    [IMG]
bullies are mastiff/bulldog/staff mixes so they naturally have much more bulky build

no, but i do know the owner, i currently dont have my own dog (old one passed away year ago) but i do help with shelter dogs and my friend who owns two pits of her own
IMO every pit should look like that, even catchweight pits in 25-30 kg range i have seen were athletic as fuck, almost 0 fat. bullies are hideous, they are barelly a step up from show bred english bulldogs
