I been shooting a PSE Beast the last 18 years and I finally upgraded to something that's far lighter and way faster than my previous compound. Been wanting a short limb for a long time now. Finally spoiled myself.

I can't wait to slam one of these mechanical broadheads behind the shoulder of a deer. Can't wait until archery season starts!

have you ever experimented hunting with a makeshift primative Bow?

That would be fun...lol.could be dangerous to.

Also are you allowd to hunt Boars in your country with a Bow?
that would be fckn nerve racking.

Never hunted with a Bow man.so im just curious.
no this old poacher who used to hunt Red Deer with a cross bow and a Bulldog bitch!
him and his bitch would stalk the deer.he would have the skill to get real close and cross bow it in the eye!then slip his bitch.when the bitch had hold he would make a apearnce with his knife.
this old fella is real skilled and his bush craft and animal savvy is first class..
he had a stroke last week im sorry to say.great shame..the lock down got on top of him i think.drove him mad staying in the house..

    Rambiling now sorry.
i find any sort of hunting facinating..hunting is a lost art these days.we cant all be hunters of course, but modern man relies far to much on the supermarket for his food.
    all the best.
and all the best for deer/bow season!

Yes, you can hunt hogs with a bow though you better be in a stand. It's hard enough to knock down a boar with 5.56mm round let alone an arrow. Can be done though.

They aren't prevalent in my state so don't hunt them personally..

I don't believe it's cruel at all. A broadhead is a vicious hole maker. They leak out very fast. I've never even had to track a wounded deer. They drop where I hit them.

When those mechanical broadheads open up on impact, they carve out of a 2.25" diameter hole in the animal. They bleed out pretty quickly.

People take Grizzlies, giraffe, rhino etc with compound bows so a pig isn't too big a task.

Never hunted with recurve bows but I've shot them a few times over the years at targets. Far less efficient than a compound bow is.

When you pull a recurve bows string back, you're holding the entire amount of weight the bow generates. If it's 50lbs, then you are holding 50lbs the entire time you have it drawn. That's a tough thing to do since you usually will pull it back when you see the deer then have to hold it there until the deer is in range and presents a shot. Your arm will fatigue very quickly. With a compound bow you have cams on the end. The oblong circles on the end of the bow. These help tremendously. Mine has a 80% let off. That means, my bow is set at 55lbs. When I pull back the string, I'm only pulling 55lbs until I hit half drawn. Once I hit that halfway point the cams give me 80% let off of the weight. So instead of holding back the whole 55lbs, I'm only holding about 15 or 20 lbs. Can hold it drawn much longer because you aren't holding the entire weight back. Compounds are way more efficient for hunting than recurve are.

( a recurve bow is basically what your calling a makeshift bow ).

I have one but it never gets used. Same with my crossbow.

  9. Thanks for your imput AGK.
a recurve bow is the name im looking for.
primetive hunters must of been fckn strong armed lol.must of had pure mucle on there arms man.
we got on for thousands of years with make shift everything, but the people back then were a lot thougher..because ive never hunted with a bow, untill you just explaind,i just did not see how hard and taxing it must of been to hunt with a primitive bow.thanks for explaining that man, some things are very easily over looked.(now youve explianed i can see it making your arm like jelly)
these primitive bows were not only used for hunting, but also in warfear right up untill around 1700.theres records of Indian/Americans,Scottish and all sorts of people useing them.
not very acurate, exteamly heavy, but got the job done all the same.

Would it be possible to make a makeshift cam/ let of thing?
you think primative people may have come up with anything similare to this?

    all the best.

Probably not without knowing some kind of metal work. Wouldn't be very primitive then. Lol.

You'd have to know how to both make the cams as well as attach it to wood securely.

Whether it's a recurve or compound, Archery takes far more skill to hunt with than guns do. Anyone can knock one down a hundred yards+ with a rifle and scope. In archery, you have to be close enough that you to can see the white of their eyes. Not an easy task to do when talking Whitetails.

I make it even harder on myself as I don't hunt from a treestand. I prefer to stalk.

    Soze.
This will give you an idea of the size of the hole some of these broadheads can make. This is an older model broadhead that's been used hense it's poor condition but you could damn near put your fist through the size hole some of these tips can make.

    Opens up on impact.

  13. Nice topic man...cant belive no other bow hunting lads have chimed in.

I never new they make that much damage man.like wow.
    seriously powerful shit.

We allowed to shoot bows in the back garden at a target over here.but thats it.you can even by em over the counter but just not allowed to hunt with em.
they got a Cobra in the shop by me.think its 180lbs.looks good.couple hundred quid to by.
i think its a Cobra..Barrnett make this one.looks similare to the Hoyt challenger you use.
well,i say they look a like, most of em just look the same to me.

Another thing is them old recurve bows look massive man.i read they were over five foot in lenthgh.not sure how true this is?but old drawings indicate they were pretty big.

I cant even imagine AGK how good it must be to stalk around with a bow!
how far are you before you can see the white in there eyes man?haha you must have to be right up to em.
very primative.very skilled and a super awesome way to spend time with your family and tap in to nature at its rawest..youe also tapping in to the past, getting a glimps of how are ansesters hunted.

    Super awesome bro.
    all the best.

Probably 80lbs. No one other than power lifters are going to be able to pull back and hold 180lbs. Think they only go to 90 lbs unless your into crossbows. They go up to a lot higher. My bow is set at 55lbs but it can be adjusted up to 90lbs.

Don't really need more than 40 - 50 lbs. IMO. At 55lbs. my arrow goes in and out of a deer clean through broadside. Usually find my arrow either in a tree or in the ground 10 to 20 yards away from the deer. Anything more is just kind of overkill.

You pretty much aren't taking any clear 40 yard shots in the woods. I've never shot one more than 20 to 25 yards from me which is about where you want them with a bow. With a crossbow you can take that out to about 50 to 60 yards.

Yes sir it is the best!.

  18. Hows it work?
do you need some sort of licence or can anybody take deer?
i no in the Scottish Highlands you gotta pay and you can only shoot em with a gun.
this imo has resulted in far less Red Deer being culled, witch in turn results in far less forestry.and lots of ticks.
this is because hunting or stalking Red Deer in the Highlands is aimed at the moneyed class not the poorer classes.
scientists were saying the deer were destroying the trees so to counter balence this with nature these scientists came up with the suggestion to introduce wolves and lynk!
yet a poor man wanting a meal gets six moths jail for killing one?...fckn crazy over here mate.

  19. Yes i got it wrong..its a cross bow the one im on about.
fckn monster though.expensive, but they do a cheaper 80lbs one.they say the cheaper one is just as good.but i think they saying this because it sells more oftern then the 180lbs one to be honest.
ive been meaning to buy the cheaper one for about two years now,but i only hunt birds realy.gotta travel far to see any deer.

Thanks for the imput.my old poacher friend told me his cross bow was around 180lbs and it would stick in the deers eye!littery blinding and confusing the thing were it thrashed around so much it could only be safe to kill it if a dog was holding on(Red deers are fckn strong as a ox,and your dead if you get in the way of one thrashing around-they can weigh close to 300lbs)
im not sure if whitetale are that big?but they look similare to a Red to me!
woodland stalking with a bow sounds awesome.
something ide defintly like to try.

    All the best mate.

Have to buy a license to hunt them here. Anyone can buy one though and it's not very expensive. In my state its 23$ for a general hunting license. That let's you gun hunt small game, 2 turkey tags, pheasant, grouse, woodchuck and one Whitetail buck Northern Starlings and crow as well. You then send the game commission 8 bucks and a filled out doe application to get doe tags. Can get as many as are available at 8 bucks each. Different states prices probably very. I also have to buy an Archery license which is 25$. Don't get any extra tags or anything with that. It just lets me hunt with a bow.
