    Many years ago I was reading an article about wel known Patrick's Kenk I can hardly literally translate Mr Patrick's words, well I'll try, “I’ve been in this business for 20 years and if I use bad producers it will harm my business.” This thing crashed into my head like a nail... Today, one guy wrote to me that if Diablo were alive, he would give everything for breeding with him ... But dam, why do people start to appreciate things after as lose it? It is very easy to appreciate what is proven by time ... But how difficult it is to make a choice from what is still available ...

    Pretty sure a friend bred a female to him a year or so ago,but she never took. The long round trip may not have helped :-(

    It happens. My buddy bought Patrick's Kasai and he was bred to a number of good bitches. I got two out of the 1st litter....ended up being a winning female and a male that was the best dog I ever owned. The next litter was to a Medlin's Outlaw bitch and it was an all-game/all-show litter with the exception of one female that was dubbed a brood dog as a puppy by the owner of the Outlaw bitch. Then he was bred to a Mims Red Boy bitch and I had a winner from that litter as well. I bred to him with one of my Snooty females and filled up the chain spaces.

    I should have made room for everything that was bred to him plus bred my bitches back to him.

    I did not.

    And some 15 years later there is not a drop of it around. I have often kicked myself for letting my parts get away.

    But it happens.

    Maybe it was just because off the long trip, but if i make a long trip for a breeding i make sure i can stay there for couple of days extra. Can i ask you whic bitch your frend did bred to him? If u dont mind?

    I recently had this same type conversation with an older fellow who did dogs thru the 70's and 80's and got popped in the late 80's and again in the early 90's. He got out way back when.

    He said families fade when the production or ability to sell puppies increase. He had dogs straight off Red Boy and sons of Red Boy, way back when a Red Boy dog was looked at as a potential match dog first then a brood dog if he worked out as a match dog. Now most dogs bred heavily on one family has a breeding planned before the male's nuts drop or the female bleeds the first time. Things start to slip. He said he saw this with Red Boy dogs in the 90's so he can only imagine the slide some 20-25 years later.

    If the dogs do not produce producer's the guy that is truly checking dogs weeds them out and then the family fades in numbers but gets stronger as it gets smaller (if that makes sense). What happens is that the opposite occurs, less people check dogs yet more people breeding dogs. Families get bigger but weaker. Then these bigger weaker families find themselves at the test site and they do not hold up.

    From there people doing dogs move on. So for Red Boy the popularity kills the family as much as anything.

    This is the new reality we all face. In past it was not that easy to get this breed. There were more dogmans . Even when u had money enough u had to prove your self or you did need to have somebody with you “dogman”. Now we have small numbers off dogmans like this. Its now all about money. The purpose is getting more money than quality . Back in the days it was not that easy to get in contact with a dogman . They were private people. They were selecting the new lucky owners the same way they were selecting their dogs and combination. Now you can get easily in contact with most off the breeders and. This most off the breeders are just chekking if you get the money. If you have the money you get the dog or the blood. Beside all this, i must say and admit , i see a lot conformation shows this conformation shows are not good for this breed. They just look at the cover not the inside. A lot off this type people are breeding just for the look. Its now all about having a Confo champ.

    The conformation and sport shows are only good for a good push to the breed, so people get a different view on the dangerous pitbulls. They can see and check out the breed in a show or in sport. It is positive for the breed. But i agree, breedings based on show quality or money quality is no good for the apbt.

    The easiest way for europe dogman now is to go to a country where its legal, or buy dogs from those active countries, from there will be lots of videos available so we know what we buy instead of seller stories.

    Let's not live in a fantasy about these dogs. Con feeley, Charlie lloyd, joe Colby and the Irish fresh off the boat would sell dogs. It's always been a part of the dogs from day 1. Open the oldest magazine you can find and guess what you would see add up the wazoo with phone number or address listed next to stud or liters on the ground. No you didn't need a secret password or reference to get the magazine just a few bucks. Make contact and you had yourself a dog. Get real folks they weren't demigods just regular folks with dogs.

    I totally agree with this. Dogs or whatever as human we look at the past with rose colored glasses about a lot of things. The very guys that were 'real dog men back then' were hoo-dooing one another, selling known curs, peddling dogs in magazines, selling to the first cat that ran up the drive with a handful of money.

    I would venture to say it would have taken more, maybe even a lot more, effort to get a pit bull back then simply based on geographic location. There were less people selling and less people buying so there would have been some travelling/tiime involved. Today there is one available on just about every corner.

    The only real difference between today and yesteryear is they pushed some of the dogs in a magazine which came out once a month or so and today I'm one click of a button away from pretty much any family on the planet. The internet and then doubling down with social media is maybe the only true difference between the eras in the dog game. Good dogs are still good dogs and good people are still good people. A different topic altogether but close in context, nutrition and the understanding of feeding the canine has changed. But then again, the dogs as a species have not evolved to the point the feedings of yesteryear is a detriment to the dogs.

    Other than the internet/social media I think all things are pretty much the same. If Con Feeley or Maurice Carver or Tudor or whoever had access to a smart phone to push their dogs onto the next guy, they too would have been one click away.
