ok fellas i've got a 6 month old apbt that around 45lb. he's a house dog with me and my 2 sons, ages 17 and 10. i'd like to start him on a small domestic pig round the same weight as he is to see if even has it in him to grab the ear. my question is once i introduce him to such "activities" as catching pigs will he still have the same temperament around me and the kids? i guess what i'm asking is do any of y'all have a house bulldog that is also a catch dog? i just don't want him aggressive towards my sons is all. he's great around them now and i don't wanna change that.
    thanks,
    Big Ed

I know that with police dogs.....they do what they are trained to do, whether it be sniffing drugs, chasing criminals, sniffing for bombs, etc...but when their day is done, they go home and are normal house dogs.

I would think the same applies for training of this breed to do that activity.

I figure that much. Do as you wish with your pet. However it's not going to make any difference because it's going to be the same couch dog as before. Might as well play tug of war because the outcome is going to be the same. You ain't going to know shit. No disrespect

Give it a whirl. He may surprise you and be something you did not expect or he may be the same old family pet you left home with on that first adventure.

I carried an all-out match quality type Snooty bred bitch to Art Parker's (maybe 20 years ago or so). She looked at that pig, then looked at me and then looked at the pig again. She looked back and pretty much said, "WTF is wrong with you, are you f'ing stupid or something?". And that is as far as my $20 entry fee got me. She left home and came back as the exact same dog.

I thought the pig thing was pretty cool and gave it a stab. It was not her cup of tea.

I then returned with a female Fila Brasileiro, a Brazillian mastiff, a breed of dog that has been just about destroyed by show breeders and money grabbing peddlers. I put mine on a pig and she caught like she was born to do it. She was a very masculine looking, very athletic 125lb. female. Moved like a big cat. Smooth, and cat like quick.

I took her to a conformation show and was laughed out of the ring as she had way too many faults such as ear set, muzzle length, stop, etc...all the things I could give a shit less about.

She was bred to look good but she didn't. She was not bred to perform but she did.

So goes the tales of people knowing how to breed dogs.

There is only one way to find out anything with a dog and that is to give it a try.

    Good luck.

As Bama and Slim said the best suggestion would be to get with knowledgeable folks in your area and try it. They should know how to "get him started" the proper way. There are plenty of hog dogs that are good family dogs. Your sons are old enough the dogs shouldn't confuse them with a pig so I wouldn't worry about it. Keep in mind, just because your dog "catches" a pig doesn't mean he would make a good hog dog. I've taken a few who wanted to fight the hog and that's not good for catching hogs so they were not brought out again. Some catch on with what they're supposed to do, some don't. Oh, and never mention anything about starting on domestic pigs or anything about catching in a pen. Most states it's illegal, maybe all. Good luck.
