Lots of shit gets overlooked when you are new to these dogs. One of the biggest things is breaking a young dog spirit. A fast way to ruin a dog is doing just that. Most won't hit the chain till around 6 months old. So you got a short amount of time to get there confidants and really gain the trust. Don't be hitting them, rubbing noses in shit yelling at them for doing stuff pups do. They going to get into trouble bite and tear things up. That's where you got to be smarter than that dog. Redirect the situation refocus the pup. Teach it how you need them to act accordingly. Make sure you are spending quality time interacting with them. Remember the man behind the dog is the biggest factor.

I know I've done that. Broken my males spirit and all. Guess, all I can really do is just breed him and learn the next time I guess. Btw, the boyles side is really the guy I got the pups from's main blood. The redboy jocko termite shit is what he used for a cross and that is the blood he studied for 3 years.

You could just get him neutered and let him live out his life as a beloved pet. Why is breeding always the go to route with these dogs when they aren't showing traits worthy of even being bred to begin with. What makes a broken spirited untouched dog worth breeding? I'm honestly curious at the answer.....

It's there, it's theirs, and it'll "produce what it produces regardless".

Lots of ppl want to say they're "dogmen" and have "bulldogs" without risking themselves or their dreams. You have that in every facet of a fringe lifestyle. Everyone knows someone who sells a couple grams of bud to smoke for free that acts like they're Pablo Escobar. Rappers talking about bodies and flipping dope but have been famous since they were 12 etc. It's the same thing. Clout and glory with no work or loss behind it.

Agk you make a great point. Folks got a stigma around just having a pet dog. Everyone loves to talk that hot shit about plugging curs and dg this and that fantasy about what a dog man is. They forget " dogman" started out with pets because they really just enjoy the dogs. Once you forget they are man's best friend everything is lost.

That's the difference between dogmen and most ppl around these dogs.

I just love the dogs too. I think the American Pit Bull Terrier is the greatest animal there is. However, my 16 mo male is showing a lot of bad traits but here's the thing about him. He started out, as a puppy, surviving two hurricanes in louisianna, and his biggest brother out of the litter, killed 3 of his littermates when he was 2 weeks old. Him and his sister, were the only two that fought back and stopped the biggest brother from killing them. As a result, the male I am having problems with now, was the dogman's pick. I was originally supposed to get the littermate brother of my female, but he had coccidia so he kept him and gave me his pick instead. When I came to get him, this dogman didn't want to get rid of him. He held onto him the most out of all the pups in the litter. I could tell that he didn't want to sell him. He told me as I was leaving, "if you do this one right, he's going to be a real bulldog". I drove 40 hours total to get these puppies. Been through a lot with em. I get what you saying with pets but I've had those already and I don't wanna waste my money on anymore. I'm done with that shit. I wanna create something. Think of David, the android from Alien Covenant and Prometheus. That's how it is for me.
I don't know where him being afraid of other dogs, except his sister came from. I don't understand that at all. My breeder was saying that he lost his confidence along the way and that if he was on his yard, he would already be [] animal material. Dogman insists that I have to bond with him and I have to just leave him alone and let him grow. Says if I breed them two together I will get all the fire I ever wanted or HE WILL GET OUT OF DOGS IF I DON'T. I let him and his sister run around in the woods many many times as lil pups. He ran things as a puppy. I noticed that he was dominant acting with the rest of the pups in the litter. First to bite on anything I held out there and all. All i know is, i don't wanna waste my money feeding a pet. Not my thing at all. I was raised around working animals, not pets. (Coonhounds, Beagles, Jack Russells, Rat Terriers, American Bulldogs, Pointers, etc.).

Also, I get that this breed is very sacred to those who have put the years and effort into making it what it is. However, I see at times that makes a lot of the veteran dogmen very apprehensive to teach some of the younger dudes or even outright deter them from the very same dream they had when they were young in the game. I get those were different times back then and many of the things that were acceptable or legal back then are far from it now. Sad part is, is how is the younger generation going to grow? They just keep making the same mistakes as other younger people cuz they don't got a mentor to teach em right. And as ben brockton said, "know what it is they are truly looking at" rather than a superficial opinion about a young dog. I just want to know what's your opinion on me starting my line with this bad acting male, even though he is backed by tested and proven animals in his blood.

one of the reasons why I think the dogs are ruined is cuz many peddlers are only concerned with money when it comes to the game. You right, they dont wanna do any work, just get the chain hitting curs, not look at any of them 4real, and put them on youtube hanging on a rope or running on a treadmill, call them game and sell them to newbies for 1500 to 3000 a pup cuz it's "backed by history". They breed cuz of papers alone and not dogs. Worst of all, a lot of them DON'T EVEN LIKE DOGS TO START WITH.
Another reason, to go along with that, is many of the veterans don't want to school the young dudes. I get if you an old timer, come from a different generation, with different values and morals, and you see a young dude who seems to be all about vanity and tabloid.(expensive clothes, jewelry, cars, living way above his means, over projection onto those around him that he has significant wealth for pseudo social validation, has an instagram, has a tik tok, has a youtube account, twitter, etc.) These dogs came to be by hard working, farm and country folk. Not hedonistic, superficial people. It is seen where the discord lies. But if one day, you find a youngin coming to you, like me, who doesn't have a social media, (could care less for it), cares less about the vanity in life, is awakened minded with an old soul, it would sound to me that that is the person worth teaching things to. But because many dogmen don't care or choose not to make any time for those coming up, seems counterproductive to the future of the game.

Hell yeah great posts in here. “Hey hey hey I’m on vacation every single day cuz I love my occupation.”

I think for many folks, breeding is a curiosity. And personally when I get when an itch, i scratch it lol. All we can hope to do, imo, is encourage good breeding practices and support the breeders we feel are doing right by the dogs. AGK out here making it look easy and now everyone wants a piece of the cake lol!

Zionwood, I can’t comment on if the dog is worthy of being bred but I will say breeding and raising pups is a ton of work and expense. I suggest anyone thinking about breeding a dog keep that in mind when selecting individuals to breed. Make your investment (time and money) worth it because the cost/time to acquire the original dogs will pale in comparison. If you’re inclined to do the work, then breed whatever you want. It’s your time and money after all.

That said I have a 16 month old male as well and he’s been a firecracker since the day he came home. He may look grown but he’s still a baby. I work with him everyday to be the dog I want him to be. Be patient with your dogs and encourage what you want to see out of em. Build their confidence slowly and surely. SPEND TIME WITH THEM. 1 on 1.

Lastly, to Zionwood and the other Youngbloods out there looking for a mentor in any industry/aspect of life. It’s on you to prove to a mentor you’re worth their time and effort. To have reached mentor status takes time, these men have dreams they are living and families to support. If you’ve got to shovel shit or clean toilets to make it happen then do it. That’s a small price to pay for knowledge and mistakes avoided. Prove your dedicated through actions and not just words. Don’t short yourself either tho, I would hope you select a mentor that is worth your time and effort as well.

Anyways, I think it’s great that you posted here asking for guidance. That tells me that at the very least you have put your ego aside enough to ask for help. Best of luck with your dogs and enjoy your time with them.

I will also state that I am not a dogman. Just a man who loves spending time with his dogs.

However, in my industry I was mentored by one of the best there ever was and have had the pleasure of mentoring a few good ones that will someday surpass me in knowledge and skill if they keep working hard. So I know a little something about that.

Thank you very much for replying as all I want is knowledge. I have the Socrates approach to it all. I don't really KNOW anything, I just come to conclusions that are subject to change at any time given the right evidence. I love working my yard and keeping it and my pups clean, in shape and infection free.
What i truly want is to build a solid family of bulldogs. I understand that that truly takes real time(5 plus years). My previous conclusion in my little time with these animals is gameness first and all else will follow. I do agree with that philosophy. I can't see breeding bulldogs for any other reason, as that is what they were and are still bred for. They are magical beasts, and I love beasts. I just want to know, if I breed this animal, with the way he is acting, will I compromise that breeding philosophy and back track myself with undesirable traits. I've gotten so many conflicting ideals from many people.
For example, I got one guy I'm talking to out Georgia, who runs Shorty cowboy, bolio blood off of the famous Gr Ch Lil Bobby. He has been running this blood for 15 plus years and claims that there is NO WAY IN HELL, I WILL GET ANYTHING LIKE MY MALE NOW, OFF OF HIS LINE. Says that it don't matter about bonding or anything like that, they come out confident and with an appetite for pure destruction. They are who and what they are, regardless of what you do or don't do. You can't make them unconfident or scared of anything. They have been selectively bred to be that way. That's what I want in an animal. Dont' have to necessarily be a [] animal and I know it's a tad early for that right now no matter what. I just want to know that I'm going to get some good bulldogs to build a line with by breeding these two half siblings together is all given the traits my male exhibits. Thanks again.

I will never call myself a dogman until I establish my line. Culling, being keen and observant, keeping my mind open and all. I'm just a dude who has some dogs right now or a keeper, if you will. Haven't really risked anything like that or put in ENOUGH work to truly call myself that. It is a pristine title that is used very loosely and in my opinion, must be earned. Also, he advised me NOT to test any of them as they will be hard to breed after that. I see what he is saying but I like difficulty and action. Makes my blood surge with excitement.

I'm not a dogman and my opinion on it is that it's a free country and people are free to do as they please. Who am I to judge anyone?

However, my opinion on revolving a breeding program around a male with bad traits ( though I sort of doubt you fully grasp what we mean when we say bad traits ) is that it is a pretty risky move IMO with so many good dogs out there. Especially if your planning on being a small yard. Traits get passed on to offspring and so on... At the end of the day it's your dog and you feed it so it's your choice what to feed and what to breed.

I will say, I wouldn't believe that story about the 2 week old pups. I been doing this a long time and I have to separae litters all the time at young ages however, I find it very hard to believe that a 2 week old puppy that is just getting his milk teeth and eyes either are still closed or just opening up, have enough power and movement ability at that age to kill another pup. It's extremely doubtful to me. They barely move around at 2 weeks old other than to get to a tit. If you said they were 4 to 6 weeks old I'd question it a little less. 2 weeks old though? I'd have to witness it in person to believe it.

I can't speak for other people but I never went out of my way to mentor anyone other than my kids. People are not really very trustworthy these days. It is difficult to allow anyone on your yard when the world is so full of pieces of garbage. The damage they can do is life ruining. I feel it isn't worth it to me or the breed to mentor anyone personally. I'll help on here when I can but aint no one coming here to pick up dog shit or feed but me or my daughter. Just the reality of the world we live in.....
Burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice it's shame on me.....

Thank you for replying AGK, i was actually looking for your two cents. my b, I didn't elaborate fully. He was bigger than the rest in the litter and basically smothered the first two. Then at about 5 or 6 weeks killed the last one. All these puppies, were standing tall and erect being bottle fed at about 4 days old. I have the video on my phone as well.
I'm told that the good traits that are in his blood will far outweigh the cons. I was told to breed them, keep the best and end the rest. I don't want to breed any curs or anything of that nature.

Very very true. I have run into some individuals, especially over the phone, WHO I KNOW FOR A FACT WERE TRYING TO BAIT ME. It is the reality and I apologize for my ignorance in saying that. I just know that there are some guys, like me, who grew up with them, really appreciate the history, know what a real bulldog is,(breed, not a term)love handling them, working them and love the breed that much to put in the time, risk and money to do so. You can never fault a man for simply trying to protect his own and what truly matters to him no matter what. It is a shame, that the garbage can hide the gold. Chili, I agree as well, you must prove yourself worthy of mentorship. I, myself, have a questionaire that a new person must fill out in front of me, not take it home, to get a pup, if and when i choose to sell to the public. The shelters are overrun with dogs. Mainly of what they like to call pit bull type dogs. I refuse to contribute to this problem. I despise money, underneath it all. Though I need it in order to survive, it causes so many problems. I don't want to breed and breed and breed and have to sell pups to regular people and worry where my dogs are going in the future.
