Yes it is complex the deeper you dive into it. But the truth is the op put the cart in front of the horse. I don't believe he ever seen a good dog. Let alone has the understanding of how to breed a good dog. Buddy got some pups with the intent of breeding them. Even has a questionnaire for people who are buying pups from him. Absolutely nothing I see him post shows confidence of a lick of success with the dogs. It is what it is

My hands on experience with working dogs is with K-9 bomb dogs and K-9 drug dogs, not the american pit bull terrier. I wish I could have the breed but right now, I cannot. There were a few people on this forum that taught me a lot. But I still have to learn more.

OK so if I read a book on welding I wouldn't correct a welder with a decade or more experience on the job because I read a book.

Great you wanna learn, great some ppl have helped. But genetics were touched on when he explained he didn't like his dog because it didn't act like the litter mates.

I have seen dogs who will shit house wreck anything in front of them but you had to drag them out of their house by their chain to do so. So shy they won't come out their house if you're on the yard. In my personal experience he just needed someone to do more than throw feed at him, clean his spot, and roll him to death. But that was all he ever knew. The owner hated it but wouldn't just accept it was his fault.

Now if we're talking game vs cur yes genetics are the majority of it. But shyness I 100% believe can be rehabbed with proper attention and understanding of the situation

Some old timer who once ran the breeding, selection and training program for state police/border security dogs in a former Soviet satellite country said something to the effect: if his dogs got washed out at the same rate as American LE agencies, he’d have been re-assigned to the rock quarry.

Fair enough. And thank you for the explanation.

To add to my little story. Same dog never produced a shy dog. And those dogs(even bro x sis breeding) also didn't produce shy dogs I've been made aware of.

I agree a lot with B.B. about this particular situation. Pups were bought to be bred and "start a family". He got sold some stories that soured him after he was already soured by the dogs naturally shy nature in relation to the other pups. Couple those feelings with lack of experience and the dogs never was given the positive reinforcement to help him conquer his shyness and ultimately suffered for it.

The pup is still young enough given the right situation and care he could develop into the dog he wants but chances are in inexperienced hands he'll remain this way.

You seem to have a willingness to learn and be taught. That's 3/4 of the battle there.

By no means do I know everything there is to know. But I don't speak on things I don't know about at the same time. If you're seriously interested in improving on what you have the first step is to not hold your short comings or the perceived short comings of the dog against the dog.

Keep in mind he didn't make himself, didn't ask to be what he is, didnt ask to be here, didn't ask to be with you and didn't ask what your expectations were before he hopped in the car and left with you. Your arranged agreement with him is he will love you unconditionally and be what you allow him to be. Your side is to give him the same love, nurture him, and do everything in your power to help mold him into what you want. If he falls short it's not his fault for the reasons stated above.

You need to figure out what he likes. Be it long hand walks, mill work, weight pull, flirt or spring pole, tug o war, etc and do it with him. All while maintaining a positive loving attitude towards him. Over time that will allow you both to bond and build his confidence. Remember a handler and his animal is a team. You can't expect him to uphold his end if you don't yours.

Good luck bro. Don't give up it'll set a cycle in motion of "it didn't work at first. Fuck it".

I hear you but I did say I was new to most of this. So of course, I have my narrow minded opinion on what a good dog is. But someone like you or some of the other experience folk om here have a much more accurate depiction and understanding on what a good dog is and ain't. My mind is open. Like I said many times on here. I ain't gon act like I know anything when in reality I don't. Waste of time. I came on here to seek advice and counsel of those experienced in the dogs. Not to say what I'm going to and not going to do with my situation but clarity. I ain't some young ass punk who just wants to win and get all this clout. I could give a rats ass about none of that shit 4real. Especially right now. All I want is to be able to enjoy my animals, breed them when it's right and look on my yard with a smile on my face.
I admit, I am at fault here. I understand that. I was so enthralled with the work and intensity these dogs can have that I treated my puppies as if they were velociraptor babies. I forgot that they were still dogs, babies at that. I'm ashamed but at least I can admit it so I can push forward.
And yeah, what's the problem with making a questionnaire for possible future public buyers? It ensures that person knows what the hell they are getting and isn't a bleeding heart pet owner who just wants a dog to pal around with other dogs at the dog park. But, seems I need to revise some of my questions on there as I have learned more. But yeah I was ignorant.

Thank you for not bashing me for my ignorance and inexperienced. I'm truly humble. On the positive note about him is, he is VERY STRONG. I know if he was to cut on he would be hard to handle. Very powerful dog, even as shy as he is. Very beautiful too. Very tough and durable physically too. Here's some pics of him.

I'm sure all of us have a story or 10 about fucking up. That's part of the learning curve.

I don't hold any judgements towards you over being green. We all have been there. Now it's up to you to take the 100+ years of hands on knowledge available to you and do right by the dog.

If you decide to part with him post the ped and let us know. If you plan on keeping him I gave u a good starting point on improving his demeanor and I'm sure if you ask others will also.

Good luck. Your attitude is a rare and refreshing thing these days.

Thanks. I will never succeed if I fake what I know. I love these bulldogs and all dogs in general. We as humans, honestly don't deserve them.

These dogs will make a fella crazy. The questionnaire thing is running before you learn to walk. The only mentor you need is time. Pedigree ain't shit really. Knowledge and understanding is what the dogs are built on. I wouldn't advise anyone to breed their first dogs. Especially if they aren't keeping them all.
