Maybe in other animals but in dogs the hair acutally helps them to cool off and keep warm. In fact, cutting or shaving your dogs fur can actually compromise the dogs ability to remain cool. Although wearing a fur coat in the summer might increase your risk of heat stroke, the same isn't true for your pets. Their coats actually provide a built-in heating and cooling system. It's why you aren't supposed to shave a long haired breed in the summer. That and you expose their skin directly to the sun which has its own issues. I talked to a few vets about this. Both said the same thing. Does nothing in a canine. One went as far to say if it did do anything at all, it wouldn't be enough to cool the dog in any kind of noticeable way. I've looked this up for the last 3 days and have not found one creditable piece of documentation for it. Not 1.

 

I'm not trying to be argumentative. I just prefer to go by what's been studied and documented and can be proven. If someone can find me actual scientific proof that shaving a dog does anything for cooling it I'll read it with an opened mind. I'm not one to take people's word for anything though. I'm not from Missouri but someone going to have to show me. Otherwise, the information on shaving a dog is out there in mass. None of it that I've dug up recently while looking it up says anything close to it helping cool a dog in the least.

Sponging well cools them down what else doesn't. Not everyone can sponge well.

 

Sponging is not that easy like many think. You need to know how to use it effectly. I remember Azraa kennel lost with his great dog sumo he was sick so friend of him did handle his dog . After two hours that guy put to sponge in bucket water but he didn’t sequeeze water out sponge before using it on the dog. Dog did get to wet he squeezed all water on the dog. Dog get real small and was out off concentration his focus was lost he did get a schock little. There are more story’s like this . Azraa lost his winning show that day. I agree with @F.W.K.
