Bite Technique/Genetic?

This sounds like an odd/stupid question probably, but I was wondering if there was a reason why dogs bite a certain way, if it was a product of genetics/breed/etc.

For example, my pup I noticed when she rough houses with the Rottweiler she always bites the front legs or the bottom side of the neck. Is this like an apbt trait or is it just the dog's personal preferance or what?

Another example, my Terrier mix always does several random bites usually aimed at the face.

I dno if anyone really understands my question as I'm having a hardtime putting it into words lol

Anyone know wtf I'm talking about?

  2. Well most all dogs seem to have a personal prefrence wether its legs, stifles, muzzle, ear or other...Some choice dogs will lock on anywhere it doesnt matter to them...As for genetics some would say its genetic others wouldnt..In my own personal opinion i dont think its genetic but i sure wish it was cause i would look for a gut dog and breed the crap out of him...lmao But if your qeustion is do pit bulls always go for the throat then no its completly false im not sure if thats what your askin but it is a common misunderstanding...

There are several different types of holds a dog prefers. Part is genetic and part is what works for them. Some dogs will be leg dogs and the successful and good ones will break the legs of other dogs. Others that are not quite as good will have to pay for the mistake.
There are head dogs, stifle dogs, etc. Dogs learn early what works best for them.
Others will go for the part the owner or handeler points out.
Some think a dog should always have a hold and work that hold until a better one can be gained.

I know that when you are teaching a bulldog to catch a wild boar, I was always taught to lead it up to the ear the first time and make sure it catches the ear first, because where a pit catches on a hog the first time, it will almost always catch there the rest of its life.

I wouldn,t say is a APBT thing, my pup Rocky does exactly that when playing with big brother and he,s a mutt.

Every creature that fights develops their own way of fighting. Some similar to others. Not really genetics but learned behavior. Some dogs just learn better ways of fighting that are more effective than others.

I believe that it can be an inherited trait. For example, a bird dog that is very good at it will throw pups most of the time that do the same. I have seen some squirel dogs come into this world knowing how to tree a squirel. I believe also that a dog can develop a learned behavior and pass that on to its pups. Call me crazy, that has been my observation. So, the answer is yes, and no.

Its a split imo. Certain "styles" may be inherited, but usually fighters revert to what they know, and what works, time and time again. Dogs, Humans, whatever... I think a dogs first rolls greatly influenced that dogs "style" for the rest of its career.

Thats funny, My Chihuahua always tries to grab my Pit by the ear when they are playing (She flops over and paws at him upside down or while laying on her side, I guess she figures she is making it fair)
