Wide Chests

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by 14rock, Dec 30, 2004.

  1. I have done a lot of research thinking and been around a lot of APBT's the chest width is b.s. A dog doesn't have to have a huge chest at all, it needs a powerful chest. APBT's come in all kinds of forms. And those toad pits make me sick!!!!

A dog doesn't get air by "storing it" in it's lungs. It's a matter of how efficiently the dog's system works to oxygenate the blood coming to the lungs. The structure has to allow the lungs to expand and contract efficiently to do so - a dog with excess weight in this area will tend to suffer in this regard. At he same time, you don't want a rail chested dog that is too frail like a greyhound - hence the standard: "chest deeper than wide", with barrel chest or narrow chest being a fault.

Lungs are not capacitors, they are pumps. The more efficient the pumps, the better aeration throughout the dog, given conditioning has worked well on its systemic functions otherwise. Dogs aren't dune buggies, either. Wider stance means nothing as to balance. That has to do with excellent equilibrium and athletic abilities otherwise. Footwork, elasticity, and so on.

Most who like wide chests like them because of the brute force image the dog exudes. It's merely a lack of knowledge and a will to have a macho looking dog. This is why bulldog people consider blue dogs a mutation of our breed. They are bred almost specifically for such meaningless malarkey, therefore, a mutation of our dogs is exactly what they are.
