I heard about it a lot when I was involved in rescue- if a black adult dog is surrendered to a shelter it's pretty much the kiss of death for the dog, they just don't adopt out for some reason. :(
Personally I have no general color preference in much of anything...horses, dogs, etc. it's all about the personality. Dante's black, but he shoulda been pink. LOL

I am telling ya it's those dang racist dog adopters who continue to spread things about black dogs being different and lesser than other dogs. Jeez, why can't they people realise all dogs go to heaven regardless of the color of their fur? Listen to me people...
"I have a dream, that one day my little black puppies will be judged by the content of their bark and not the color of their fur"

Is this serious? I can't believe that this is even an issue in the dog world. Some people are so damn picky when really its just a pet up for adoption... Who cares what damn color it is. It's just stupid if you ask me.

After black dogs the least likely to be adopted is a brindle.
When I go to the shelter I hope the pups are not black or brindle cause if they are really nice I will bring them home and it takes forever to find them a home.
I have this absolutely gorgeous little black and white female, 6 1/2 months old all of 30 lbs, she plays fetch completely housebroke and no one will even look at her. She has a natural stack, scales tall buildings in a single bound. I love her so I don't mind if she is here forever but it sure makes me mad when another pup who is a real pain in the butt gets adopted because they happen to be red with a big old red nose. I have pups 6 new foster pups all under 9 weeks of age. The youngest who I have had since his birth is now 3 1/2 weeks old.

Well I dont mind colors but yes I am partial to buckskin dogs. I very much like brindle dogs aswell. black has grown on me due to zebo dogs.

I dont think theres anything wrong with having a favourite color of dog.

But I do think its wrong to base an adoption purely on color. But I dont think theres anything wrong with it being a factor.

Wow, that's crazy. I myself grew up with black Chows. The first bulldog I laid eyes on was also black, so I am partial to the black ones. I have always thought that black is a more demanding and authoritive color.

We have a black brindle female and a old black shepperd so i think i am going to paint their hair so i wouldn't be judged because i have black dogs:)

This is so odd to me. Black is my first favorite color on a dog, and brindle is my second favorite. I must be super weird. lol.

    Re: "Black Dog" Syndrome

It's sad but true. I'm wondering if it's truly a black dog thing or an issue more related to the number of black labs and black lab mixes overcrowding the shelters.

I'm curious if black animals are euthanized more often just due to the sheer number of black animals that are put into the shelters and rescues vs. animals of other colors.

Good point. That would be interesting. If we could see the number of light coat dogs vs. dark coat dogs, and then see the ratios.

ahh..yes. the BLACK DOG HEX.... I have two fosters here, well three..but one is temporary.
My main two are BLACK, and to double hex one has his ears cropped.
Meatball is a musclar, nice and sweet and even NON reactive to dogs almost completly , cropped ears, and is a sweetie, at adopt a days he sits for treats and rarely if ever barks at all the crazy dogs around him.
But not ONE stinking application, people pet him, say "this ISNT a pitbull is it"
(like there is no way they could pet a pitbull.. duh).
People walk by and GRAB their children, *SIGH* as Meatball just looks at them and smiles this big bully happy smile...
Black dog hex extreme.... he has been here now for 8 months, he is so sweet I really thought he to be a fast to adopt foster..silly me

I have seen and heard of many whites and other colors being adopted, but here sits my black heads.. l o l
Scooter is much higher energy and not cute and cuddly at adopt a days (actually she looks like a frothing gargolye if I leave her for a second) she has been with me for almost 3 years, and I really consider her to be my own project dog.
But lookie at these faces..do these look like horrible dogs?
    nope..

I will tell you about my experience.

For now, I walk my 8-month black pup with my 8-year old red dog together. People stop me to tell me my dog is "cute" all the time. The interesting part is that on the most part, black folk will say black dog is the cute one and Whites will say red dog is the cute one. lol....Latinos' answers will vary but still choose the dog closer to their skin color.

Yes, i have observed that many people view black dogs as more dangerous than none blacks. It is just a dumb subconscious stereotype. That said, i prefer mine red or buckskin with little to no white. I certainly would not feed a white or blue dog. That is just my preference.
