Should breeders have thier dogs DNA profiled? With all the paper hanging etc, should the consumer be asking for a DNA profiled puppy?

Just would like some peoples opinions on this subject

depends on the breeder...if i feel he's trust worthy then no. but every breeder should offer it when selling a litter

I think its a good idea. I have one w/dna profile. I think it gives you and potential customers peace of mind. There is no doubt when you have dna to back it up.

    Who cares?

It's as easy to forge a DNA test as it is to hang papers, you're not buying any additional security.

Buy from reputable breeders, no need for anything more than a dog, and a verbal pedigree.

The only reason to register dogs is to sell dogs...the same with DNA...

There are many very simple ways of forging DNA tests, that I know of. I'm sure there are more elaborate tricks I'm not aware of. Sometimes, it's as easy as the bait and switch. Take "Dog A" to get his DNA tested because someone wants one of his puppies, but suspects you are a paper hanger. Bring in the information for "Dog A" and the actual DNA from the true parent which will correspond with the pups. Now they are DNA Registered, no chance of being bred any other way than what the cheating, lieing breeding who sold you the pups says, right? :p

Dog A is on file, and purchase was for one of "A"s pups. Papers say "So and So's A" as sire although "Dog X" sired the pups, his pedigree wasn't classy enough, but he produces dogs that will keep people coming back for more dogs off "A's" blood.

Some people register because they like the shows, pulls, and trials, not because they're selling dogs. You limit the venues you can compete in if you've got unregistered dogs. As for DNA, I haven't seen the point of doing it with my own dogs, but I'll probably start someday. Its just not a high priority for me, because I trust the breeder I've gotten them from.

I don't give dogs to people I don't know well and I sure as hell don't sell to the general public. I see no reason to do DNA profiling (despite the fact that 2 of our dogs came profiled by their previous owner/breeder). I know what I've got, I know what breedings I've done, and I don't have a damn thing to prove to any nosey person who wants to butt into my business.

    Sound good? :)

If person of "dog A" actually ownes "dog A" then I don't see any reason why that person would "hang" a dna profile on a pup if he actually ownes "dog A" in the first place. I agree, if someone is reputable, they wouldn't do it. There is no honor in it. I will not even consider buying from someone who is not well known (or personally known) in the dog business, but I once did accidently accuse someone I bought a pup from of sending me the wrong pup(Note: I did not think they would do it on purpose). The pup was pictured in a different litter but it turned out that after I made a fuss, the pup was just put in a different pen. Man, did I feel stupid after accusing one of the top breeders of sending me the wrong pup!! ~~I don't see any reason to dna test unless you want to offer peace of mind to your customers and if you are not a big name in the dog world. P.S. what the heck does LOL mean??(I am not up to date with all the text stuff, ect.)

I forgot about one thing. Some folks DNA if they're doing an AI breeding. Just to make sure you're getting what they say is in that little straw. I heard that some registries require the DNA profile on AI-produced pups, but I have no idea if that's true or not.

Why would you hang papers on Dog A, for Dog X's offspring, if you own both? Many reasons.

An example would be, Dog A is fantastic on paper, and proven himself to be worthy for public stud. Everyone wants a pup off A, and you charge $400 more stud fee on him than any other stud.

Dog X is not as pretty on paper, not as close to the breed standard, and less desirable to most.

Perhaps Dog X is throwing the type of Dogs people expect of "A" who isn't producing anything quality.

Or perhaps, you don't want everyone having pups off "A", and give them lesser bred pups instead.

Neither of which is right, but it happens in all breeds. I know Champion retreiver breeders, who have been snubbed by the same dishonest breeding practices. If someone is so low to falsify papers, never underestimate the lengths they will go to for it. Especially when DNA makes it so easy to lure unsuspecting buyers in with a false sense of security, so easily.
