Give him something else to carry like a tug or a ball if he needs something in his mouth. Biting the chain is going to ruin his teeth.

Teach him to greet people the right way- rewards for when his feet are on the ground and a correction when he is not. If you don't teach him what is right he can't change his behavior.

If its a chain leash and they are bitin it, its prolly not a good idea to yank it out the mouth , might ruin the hardware. I always would do my walking with a good harness, it makes it a lil harder for them to grab, unless hes just determined to bite. If he is really just a pup , keep practicing and correting, im pretty sure eventually itl get better. If all else fails , dont walk him anymore,lol..Im joking.

The spray bottle is a good idea and if that doesn't work try "Bitter Apple". It is sold in most pet stores and is great for getting them to stop chewing on things. Normally I would say pop the leash out of the mouth and say no but a chain leash could do damage. Bitter Apple is a great alternative and will work on other things around the house. If you can't find Bitter Apple try Binaca mouth spray. They come in a little easy to carry tube and most dogs hate that stuff. Good luck;)

Also a hint on the bitter apple, spay it one In the dogs mouth before you spay it on any thing else so that he will relate the smell with the bad taset

Hi all, behaviorist in training here..

The bitter apple gets a bad rap because people do not use it right. You are correct Aaron, the proper way to use bitter apple is to soak a small wash cloth's corner or a cotton call in the BA. then stick it in the dogs mouth and hold it closed for a up to a minute (you wont make it!).. Do this once or twice a day for three days.. THEN, you spay the BA on whatever you want and I guarantee you the dog will avoid the items like its the vets office.

The problem is that we do not want the dog to associate his leash with something to avoid, he is too young for a correction, so if this was my client, I would fist try giving the dog a high value item to carry on the walk. If he still wants the leash more than the item, then i would add a sound to the action.. a few coins or nails in a metal can works well with puppies and early dogs. If the dog is over a year and a half, I would consider a correction for the action. But again, the bitter apple will only make the dog want to avoid you clipping him on his lead in the future. Dogs should embrace and love their walks and everything connected to it.

  10. this is basically a game of tug to the dog,the more he bites the lead the more frustrated you probably get and the whole thing esculates,i have dealt with alot of dogs like this at my work, mainly athletic staffords.you must deal with this now as i have seen this to its worst degree where the dog has a full blown explosion and that is not fun to deal with!be glad your dogs a pup.try using too leads, let one drag, when your dogs grabs the lead, you simply take the other lead and let go of the one hes holding, this way it says to the dog that you wont play at his game.if you take the tension away from the lead hes biting theres no fun in it any more.hope you get it all sorted out;)

Also I would think if the lead is a chain, that in it self would not be fun for him to grab

maybe the pup just wants lose its pupp teeth

  13. When he grabs the leash immediately and sternly tell him "NO!" If you pull back you will turn it into a game, and sometimes negative attention is just as good as positive to a dog so try not to get too upset or frustrated.

I would try what others have suggested, bring a very high value treat or toy with you on the walk. When he starts to go for the chain get him to chill and sit and immediately reward him with a treat/toy. When he is walking and doing well without biting at the chain you should be praising and giving treats randomly as well.

Remember he is just a pup, so he is going to be extra playful - be patient.

My dogs all do this, I have learned to make quite the nice lil workout out of it, I have double ply nylon 5' leads and when I walk them they will grap it so I play tug with them the whole walk so not only do they get the benifit of a 3 mile walk they have to work the whole time we're walking too. I walk them in a private cemetary so the publics opinion of what they see don't really cross my mind much since no one is ever in there....:D

Somebody told me that garlic would work for that... I tried it. Begonia chewed it MORE after I used the garlic. Switched to Bitter Apple, and it worked for her great, and since she's teething, I make sure she has access to her puppy formula KONG, that way she can get her chewing out while hanging out around the house.

We use a good leather lead for walks. only 4 ft long. As far as the jumping on people, walk into him. He will have to back up and won't like it. I have even heard of people who try and step on the rear feet when they jump on you. Never tried that. You could also try ignoring him when he jumps. Cross your arms and just turn your back to him. Don't reward him by acknowledging bad behavior.
