This morning, as I was taking the dog (s) out to pee/poop before work, the neighbor's cat (which runs loose) was on my back porch (my back yard is fenced in by 5' chain link fence) and my white boy (Change) got a hold of it and killed it. Only took about 15 seconds to catch and kill. He only has scratches on his head, nothing more than when him and my other dogs play rough.

    1. Can I get into trouble???
    2. Do I need to take him to vet? (to see rabies/fleas/etc)
    3. Anyone else experience this? This is the 1st one he has killed, the other ones I got him to let go. This one, he was not letting go.

    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

    Well....

I wouldn't report it. That's just me. It WAS on YOUR property, surrounded by a fence.....
here, there's a law that cats MUST be kept within boundaries of their owner's property.

If your boy has just surface scratches, just clean em up with peroxide. Unless he has any bite wounds, I wouldn't worry about Rabies. Just keep an eye on him for the next few days.

I don't think you could get in 'trouble' per se', but IF the neighbors found out, they could cause a big stink about it, causing aggravation and annoyance. If they cared THAT much about their cat, they'd have been more responsible by keeping their cat on THEIR property. Just my opinion.

One of my girls has killed two cats and eaten one. As long as your dogs are up to date on shots and wormer I wouldn't worry too much. The only concern is parasites. My girl picked up a bad case of whipworms and lost 20lbs in a matter of weeks. Three months later she got the 2nd cat. All she left me was the head . Since her immune system and weight were down from the worms she got coccidia. Now all the dogs are on Interceptor because it prevents ALL worms unlike Heartgard or Ivomec.

JR: we're on interceptor right now......I give it year round. Luckily, he did not 'eat' any of it, just kill it.

PITBULLPRIDE: Yep, my yard, my fence, my property, their cat on it! No bite marks, just scratches. I used soap and water, but did not *duh* think of peroxide. I will do that when I get home from work.

    Other responses welcome too:)

Don't report it. Had a friend that had a Weimeraner (sp) that mortally wounded their neighbors cat. He stopped said dog from killing it. They sued him for vet bills and everything, about $3000.00. Judge said if the dog had killed it all they could have gotten was about $60, the cost of replacement for a mutt cat. Plus he had to get rid of the dog.
But the dog was not on his property. Neither animal was where they belonged.

If your dog has his rabies shots, I'd just monitor him and hope for the best on the rabies front. Rinse out the scratches and put some neosporin or something on them. Bury the cat.

Not your fault the dude decided not to contain his cat. People seem to think that because the cat it fluffy and meows, it can neither cause property damage nor get hurt. While you may get a few nasty looks from the next door folk, if they don't find out from you, they may find out from someone else and the world is full of haters and instigators. The choice on what to do however, is up to you. If your dog is up to date on shots, there's really no need to take him to the vet

I would lay the cat in the road and not worry about it. Tell you dog "good boy" for me.

Just to comment on what PBP said. The law here is that cat's are "free roaming animals." Just depends on where you live. I wouldn't report it if it were me though. We get enough crap without having to worry about a cat. I'm sure the owner's loved their cat and will miss him, but why should you have to take heat for something their cat did. Coming in your yard.

Damn really? Free roaming? SHOOT.....IF that was the case here, you best keep your damn cat contained if you REALLY care about it THAT much....I mean, if MY dogs are on MY property, and they snatch up a cat that is on MY property.....my condolences to the "owner." Here is it a law. PLUS, I can't STAND roaming cats that spray on everything, and dig shit holes in the yard, and scratch the paint on my truck and bring fleas into my yard. UGH. lol

    My own experiences...

Moved to my first apartment when I was like 19 years old. First night there my 2 APBT's killed my neighbors cat! Next morning the little boy was calling "here kitty kitty" I felt bad but there is no way I'm going to endanger my dogs by telling them their cat was dead. The cat went into the trash.

Since then my APBT's have killed and/or eaten several cats on my property over the years. Best thing to do is not say anything in fear they could poison your dogs or call animal services. Don't bury the cat..... the dogs will dig it up I know it's been a couple of days but I would take it to a dumpster or put it out with your other trash.

I live in a rural area now I just shoot them. (sorry cat lovers...) Talk to animal services they said that is fine if they are on my property. It's better than my dogs killing them or injuring an eye on my dogs, or worse....

When I had cats growing up we loved them enough to keep them indoors so they would be safe.

We Had The Same Problem, But The Cat That My Dogs Killd Belong To My Wife. We Whier Outside Cleaning Up The Dogs And The F---ing Cat Came Out To Them ( Game Over ) Me And My Son Tryed To Stop Them But It Was To Late. We Put The Cat Out In The Trash Down The Blook So That My Wife Wont See It. For Days She Would Go Outside To Call The Cat, But It Never Came. I Told Her That Someone Must Have Took It, To This Day She Still Dont Know What Happend. So Dont Report It

If You Use Peroxide It Will Change The Color Of Your Dog Around That Area, It Happend To Us And Stood That Way For A Long Time. I Would Us A Medical Cream.

I aways wait till high noon to place dead animals in the road or in a dumpster. If someone uses common sense they might just be OK.

Also, I just thought you might know that this site is equipped with a spell checker. It is in the top right corner of the box that you post your replies in. It says abc and has a check mark under it. In the future I would appreciate it if you would use it. Most of the members of this forum are adults and I'm sure they would appreciate it also. This is a message board, not a text message board.

    Thanks
