Mt. Clemens Adopts New Pit Bull Rules

MyFox Detroit -- Owners of pit bulls in Mount Clemens are now on a short lease after the City Commission passes new rules governing the breed. Violating the new ordinance could result in fines or jail time. However, one owner and breeder of pit bulls thinks it's unfair, while his neighbor sees both sides.

On his Mt. Clemens street, pit bull owner Andre Knight has Bella and Nitro as his pets and he breeds them. About the new dangerous animals ordinance, Knight tells FOX 2, "Any dog could be dangerous, though. It's all about how you raise your dog. You could find a little Chihuahua and they could be dangerous."

Knight resents the so-called "pit bull law" just enacted by the Mount Clemens City Commission.

"If you own a pit bull, you need to register your pit bull with proper vaccination and proper licensing. If you're dog is outside in the public, you need to have your dog on a four foot leash. It also needs to be muzzled," said Mount Clemens City Manager Douglas Anderson.

As for outdoor dogs, "It has to be kept in a kennel with six foot sides with a top, fully enclosed," Anderson said.

Knight's neighbor two doors down is Kimberly Huggins-Simkus. She says his dogs are okay, but still sees the need for rules.

"I've been bitten by a dog when I was a child, and it's really important," said Huggins-Simkus. "Too many dangers of little kids. They want to go up. They want to pet the dog. They don't understand animal behavior. They don't know what skulking ears are. They just know it's a dog."

Her son, Joshua, knows to back away slowly. We asked him what you he would do if he saw a dangerous dog. He responded, "You tell an adult immediately, and you stay away from it."

In the end, Knight says he has ethics beyond a city ordinance. "I breed them... I sell the puppies... but I don't sell them to people that's going to go and fight them and everything," he said.

Their is nothing wrong with pit-bulls it's the irresponsible owners that gives the dogs a bad name, I love my dogs and I trust them with my life at first I didn't, I was scared to death of them because of the media, but when I started raising them, I love them, they are the most loving dogs I've ever seen, I had two doberman pincher's and I mean I love them also, they are like these dogs they love their owners (as long as you take care of them), they are very protective like these dogs are, you come in my house right now and I promise you Rufus will actually act like he will eat your butt up but after you come in he will lick you to death (he loves company) ;)
