Malnourshed pup?....Believe it or not they are littermates!!

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by Mathematic, Oct 17, 2009.

  1. We got shooter, maybe 6/7 weeks after he was born....about 4 months ago. The person who was selling said that the mother had 8 in the litter and we only chose 1 and my boy chose 1.

Like most puppies, i assume, he a had a small body and a big round pot belly...We took him to the vet (like any new dog owners should do) When we got him we found out that he had hook and round worms. With the advice of the vet, we took the normal procedures to get him in good shape...now hes a ball of energy..lol..

fast forward to today...me and my girl was talking about getting another pup..so we called the breeder to see if they had anymore pups from the same litter left? they said yes, only 1 left. Now, as of today Shooter weighs 22lbs, upon arrival i noticed the pup was very tiny to be 4 months old..as you might can see in the pic below Shooter out weighs his littermate by atleast 10lbs(just a guess). When picked him up, we could clearly see and feel his ribs..and his spinal coard.... The insides of his ears where filthy and his claws filthy and he stunk baaaaad and he was filled with fleas....we decided to take him. As soon as we left we took him to petsmart to get him a flea bath and get his nails cut.

Now the other problem is that, when we bought Siroc home, Shooter was/is overly aggressive...Eventhough they are littermates...rightnow, we have Siroc in the room with us..in shooters old cage and Shooter in the other room.. should we keep them in the same room or should we seperate them until Siroc gets more healthy?

What steps should we take to get him on the right track?

    Siroc..

That's some ''breeder''. I'd definitley keep them separate for a quarentine period to make sure that little guy isn't carrying anything. Get him to the vet for a check up.

That's a big difference. Glad you stepped in and helped the little guy. Yes, a trip to the vet first and foremost and your other dogs should warm up to him being they are all young. Not unsupervised of course...And then again, they may not. Only time will tell....
You will probably have to separate as they get older. Good luck with the little one.

Are you positive they both came from the same litter and the "breeder" didn't just sell (or give) you whatever they had available? Either way glad you got him cause he sure looks like he needed someone to care for him properly! :)

  7. Update:
As stated in the first post we started to keep them seperate and we will continue to do so,thanks guys,...we put Siroc in Shooters old cage in the room with us...for one, he hates being in the cage, we decided to put him in another room because he just whined and whelped most of the night...and we couldnt take it anymore. he woke up at 4am and wouldnt stop..Are there any tricks you guys would know to keep this to a minimum or is it something we'll have to deal with? Shooter never whined when we put him in the cage to sleep...

Siroc definitely has worms, his poop confirms it. We made him an appointment for Saturday for a check up and to get his shots and all. Is there anything we can do in the meantime as far as the worms go? because they look like they are killing his insides....

One other thing...i noticed that Siroc's penis would protrude all the way out and he would lick it..but no discharge. Is this something we should be concerned about?

    Thank your for the responses...

@GAPITS, I know it may not look like it but im positive that they are of the same litter, shocking...when the breeder was down to the last 3 they were really trying to get rid of them..and Siroc was the last.

Wow is all I can say, it is a shame that people like those breeders are even allowed to have dogs if they can't be bothered to give them minimal care. I am very happy to see he is a lucky pup and has gone to a home where he it seems will get the best of everything!

You can try putting a t-shirt with your scent in the crate with the dog. :)

Kongs frozen with peanut butter works miracles for a whiney puppy.

well first off you have to teach them that whining wont make someone come get him,, or show any attention,, cuz as long as he's gettin noticed by whining he will continue,

now far as the size,, well cared for dogs always has a leg up on one riddled with parasites,, lucky the hook worms didnt kill him if he has those,, worm him immediately for the hookworm now hit him once a week with the wormer to kill any remaining worms that may have hatched

What do the new pup's teeth look like? While his body size could be from malnutrition, he looks younger and most probably from another litter. Not trying to be rude, but from the sound of the breeder, I can't believe you'd take anything she has to tell you as "fact". And I sure as hell cannot fathom going back for another one. But a vet's quick examination of the teeth in both dogs should be able to at least help you know if they are both the same age.

I also second keeping them separated until a vet check-up. You also need to be uber-vigilant about scooping the poop in the yard and disposing of it so as to not allow cross contamination. If one of your other dogs steps in worm-infested poop and then gets around to grooming himself, he will recontaminate himself and now you'll have 2 (or more) dogs with worms.

Good luck with it all. :)

  16. Update: Siroc is coming along great...just got his second set of booster shots today... His weight is gettin up there. Although hes still smaller then Shooter..hes very healthy. Here are a couple pics.

Shooter - left, Siroc- Right with patch on eye...

@ Michele...lol yes i think that kinda worked..

@ Shadow...i'll still try that as treat...

@ Mia...yes, im positive that they are from the same litter....no question about it. As i told GAPITS...i was shocked at his condition when we first seen him. And yes his teeth were discolored/brown. The vet said that it was normal for dehydrated and malnourished dogs to develop discolored teeth....most of his teeth are good now, tho.

I have seen this kind of size difference in ONE Am Staf litter in 30 years.

The pup was exactly half the size of the others at birth (8 ozs.) and they usually don't make it, but this one did and maintained the 1/2 size to adulthood.

She was a 28-29 pound female Staf at adulthood. Cutest thing ever and just a miniature version of the others.
