Does spaying bitches stop them or hold them back from turning on...maybe till a later age or not at all. whats your thoughts on this?

sorry, i should elaborate...i mean if you get one from a shelter or something thats already been desexed. i know males can have the drive taken out of them but just wondering about the females.

I wouldn't concern yourself as to whether or not a dog you got from the pound is going to "turn on" or not. Give the dog a good home, and let it be a dog. Care for it. Don't care if it is going to "turn on".

how do you know males can have the "drive" taken away lol, you kidd'n me mate.
if they got it, they gonna keep it, if they aint, they just aint.
gett'n dogs desexed can go both ways mate, it is a god dam myth. it may settle some down and it can also, if you like, hype the other one up.
desexing a dog is done so they can not produce and for no other reason, with the exception for any health isues of course.
its like everything mate, people give false reasoning to others to justify what is or has been done.

100% on the money, from experience. mine has very high DA and wants to attack any dog that comes near him, he started to turn on at around 8-9 months old and was desexed at around 10 months and his DA has gotten worse as he has matured.

I agree. But if the dog does "turn on", just be prepared and responsible. :)

seein how many dogs & bitches have to be started anyway i wouldnt trip on it. If they turn on in there own way then you just have to deal with it, intacted or not.

Yes, it is a myth and don't let a vet tell you otherwise (their practice is medicine, remember, not behavior). DA a lot of times is just genetics, she has it or she doesn't.

Studies show that the highest incidence of interdog aggression (all breeds) is between two spayed females.

Me too. I think in general it can reduce it in males moreso than females(a bitch is a bitch is a bitch!), but don't count on it.

not to sound harsh, i think it would be best if you got a different breed if you want to avoid a dog with dog aggression. dog aggression is most likely gonna be a huge factor if you have an apbt. do alittle more homework before getting an apbt.

It depends on the dog seen it help with some dogs and make no difference in others.

thanks for all your thoughts.... it confirmed what i believed... too many people over here (vets included) think and promote that once you get a dog fixed you really reduce the aggression. I could understand it may have some success with males, but i could never work out how that that claim could be made regarding females. :)

When most people say neutering/spaying your dog helps lower Dog Agression, they are talking about all DOGS in general. They are referring to an average of studied cases, from the docile Labrador to the bite-happy Dachshund and every imposing Akita.

And yes, the studies have shown that it can reduce DA to an extent. However if you have a dog that has very high DA throughout its pedigree, fixing the dog in some cases may not work at all in lowering DA. It would be like using a garden hose to put out a forest fire.
