Dogfighting operations raided in Wilkinson County

GORDON — Authorities said they seized 70 dogs and found the decomposed remains of several more Thursday morning in raids on suspected Wilkinson County dogfighting operations.

One female dog’s right ear had been nearly ripped in two, and both its ears were covered in what appeared to be dried blood. Nearby, a tawny-colored male dog staked out with a short heavy chain was so emaciated its ribs and vertebrae were showing. Those dogs were among the 57 seized from 5006 Ga. 57 near Owens-Shepherd Road.

Another 13 dogs were seized from 113 Miller St. in Gordon, where Police Sgt. Andy Hester said the property owner didn’t know about the dogs being kept on his property.

But at the Ga. 57 site, Christopher “Tony” Antoina Williams, 41, was arrested at his home on a single charge of misdemeanor cruelty to dogs. Sheriff Richard Chatman said Williams ultimately could face a charge for each abused animal found on his property.

Speaking briefly with reporters near his chained-up dogs before his arrest, Williams said, “I don’t dogfight. I definitely don’t.”

Gordon police also arrested a man in their case and will file 13 animal cruelty charges, Hester said. But he said he would not release the man’s name until he completes an arrest warrant today.

Law enforcement officials said they have not discovered ties between the two locations.

All of the animals are being taken to an undisclosed location by the Atlanta Humane Society, which is having veterinarians evaluate and treat the dogs. Chuck Simmons, an investigator with Atlanta security company Norred & Associates, said some puppies can be rehabilitated, but other dogs can’t be. He didn’t know how many could be adopted.

“It’s way too early to tell that,” he said.

Hester said the Gordon site was the city’s first suspected dogfighting bust in a decade. A female dog’s teeth were filed flat, possibly to reduce injury to male dogs, an Atlanta Humane Society worker said.

Hester said the dogs aren’t vicious.

“They’re all nice, sweet dogs, very affectionate,” he said.

Chatman said the case in unincorporated Wilkinson County was unprecedented.

“This magnitude of dogs, we’ve never run across it,” he said.

But deputies had been out to that property before. Chatman said several years ago deputies chasing a burglary suspect had discovered a dogfighting ring in the back of the property. That had been put under observation, but the ring is now overgrown and not used, with no evidence of fighting there, he said.

“We never substantiated anything by that,” Chatman said.

The pit, a 16-foot square made of plywood, remains standing near the back of the property.

Simmons said he’d received a tip about the Wilkinson County sites, investigated, and passed the information on to the law enforcement agencies. The company runs a toll-free animal cruelty hotline, (877) 215-2250.

Simmons said he’d found the scattered, decomposed remains of six or seven dogs in the woods, several hundred yards past the dogfighting ring.

Most of the living dogs were staked out on the property with a short length of heavy chain, which scraped the ground. Most dogs had an improvised shelter, a plastic storage drum with a hole sliced in one end, but did not have food and water bowls. Two empty bags of dog food were nearby. Few dogs barked or growled. Many wagged their tails or put their tails between their legs.

An old stroller was abandoned near most of the dogs.

Piles of toddlers’ toys and bicycles were left near the alleged dogfighting ring. Besides debris, about 20 cars also covered the rural Wilkinson County property.

Chatman, who himself owns four pit bulls, said officers will meet with prosecutors today to try to finalize the charges.

“Some of the dogs were not as bad as we thought. There were some that needed medical attention. And there were others that appeared to me to be in good health. All of them were very docile,” the sheriff said. He paused. “They all wanted somebody to pet them.”*

    Thats usually the case.
Seems like more and more Bulldogs are getting seized in GA. Doggers may want to get out while they can.

Sounds like the one dog with the split ear got loose and into a bit of a scrape. Might have a few more animals than he can manage.

*Well I looked at all the pictures and didn't see any chewed up or emaciated dogs and no heavy chains either. If it was as bad as they said it was then you would think there would be some pictures showing the public. That pen however doesn't look good at all. Even if it was used to train young dogs on hogs it looks bad ad if they weren't using it, should've taken it down.

Shame on him for leaving his chain spaces a mess and no water for his dogs. And to leave a Pit up on your property makes me think this guy is better with NO DOGS! This irresponsible bullshit is exactly why the heat is on all of us. I've seen much worse but you must always be prepared for the law to come knockin! Use your fucking noggin folks. To many morons own this breed. We can honestly call this a weeding out process and these dumb SOB's are doing the game a big favor!

I don't think anyone is ever truly prepared for the law to come knocking. The law can find what the law wants to find. The pit wasn't even in use.He had a few dead dogs in the woods, dogs do die once in awhile and you got to do something with them.I really don't see where having a stroller, bikes and 20 old cars is relevent in any way to the story except they were trying to make the dogs owner look bad, nothing illegal in having those things.Anyway,as we all can see,the witch hunt continues.

Maybe even more so after Vick (what do folks from GA think?). Even against folks who don't or wouldn't even imagine [] their APBT. It really is a witch hunt.

  10. I live in Dekalb County,GA..I moved here from NJ in, Dec 08.I see ALOT of Pitbulls being walked with leashes and off.I have called Sanitation numerous times for dead Dogs and Cats on the roads .I do not agree in Breeding the breed BECAUSE,of all the unwanted ones in the Shelters and being left because, the owner not being able to care for them.I could have bought a beautiful Black Pitbul lfor 250.00 from a guy that bred his female because, they desperately needed money.I was able to rent here in with two Pitbulls but, not in NJ..iI have a six foot fence around the backyard it does help....I keep my Dogs inside...

Where are the pictures of the emaciated dogs or the scarred ones. Sounds like Norred and assoc.(AKA the hsus intelligence agency) is leading one hell of a witch hunt. The bad part is it funded by the ignorant public who probaly really want to help animals.

What gets me is how the say the pups can be rehabilitated but the older ones probably not, since when is animal aggression something to pts a dog over. Yea the [] should not have been there, those dogs look alright to me the place just needs some clean up.

The yard could have been cleaner. But, I understand how hard it is to keep leaves out of chain spots. I only have a couple trees that drop leaves, and it's hard to keep raked up. I can't imagine what it's like with all those trees. And there could be better houses. I've used barrels before, and they are fine. But, wooden dog houses look much better to the public. I know we should be able to house our dogs like we want, but there is always prying eyes. We need to present ourselves and our dogs in a respectful manner.
