I have to agree, i think a 22 lbs or a 26 lbs dog has a good working time on a 31 lbs badger and it needs to be good.

I've seen dogs that would fight each other till they drop jack on mr Brock, it takes a real good dog to do them with regularity

Old brock can definitely dole out some punishment, I've seen a few dogs with jaws hanging off after brief encounters below ground and the draw dogs can come off just as bad when trying to pull a pissed off boar out its hole..

The famous Wheaton strong dog Peter Sinead was stuffed by his owner when he passed and it was only then that he found out the dog had had multiple fractures to his jaw throughout his career. Now I reckon it takes quite a dog to be working regularly with a broken jaw.

    hii from a newbe .
underground with the badgers back to the dirt and only way out is to go through the dog and the dogs stays while taking sever punisment that to me is gameness but in a different way to box ~dead~ gameness as the badger is fighting for its life in its own environment on its own turf and anyone who thinks these animals cannot dish out severe punishment is deluded EXAMPLE if the badger was in a box {obviously it aint gonna come to scratch but you wont get much gamer when your between it and its life} and stayed alive for as long as even half an hour it would do probably more damage than 99% of bulldogs but they aint gonna last that long above ground with a good bulldog

  7. Had a good, genuine laugh at some of the posts on this thread! Why some folk want to talk about things when its as plain as day they are not speaking from their own experience is beyond me. A draw dog is just that. Drawing is not baiting; why havn't any of the "digging" lads said that yet? Some saying "dog can kill a badger blah blah" that isn't a draw dog, that is a baiting dog.

i dont dig but this is about baiting, the question regardless of ethics is does it prove a dog is game?

  9. The thread is called "Badger Trial Dogs", trials were not baiting

Baiting is the act of worrying or tormenting a chained or confined animal by setting game dogs upon it for sport. The dogs bite, and tear to subdue the opposing animal by incapacitating or killing it. Baiting is a blood sport used for entertainment and gambling. It is illegal in most countries with varying levels of enforcement

i would say because it's purpose was as sport and a test for the dog not pest control baiting it was.
but i get your point although im sure they werent all done by the book and people altered the rules to better test their dogs.

We have honey badgers over here in Iraq. I don't know about any of you but I have seen vector cages (made of stainless) and the badgers and hyena's chew through them in less than 9 hrs. That's pretty impressive to me.

Although I "generically" agree there is one way to test for gameness (I do not believe "catching" as in wild boar is a test of gameness as rank curs will make fine catchdogs), I do believe badger baiting of old to be a different test altogether. First, a badger can remove a dog's lower jaw. A badger has very strong jaws and is quite tenacious. Next, the dog is usually meeting that badger face to face. I believe one of, if not the most sensitive parts of a dog is it's muzzle. I knew of many pitmen that favored a muzzle dog and I believe enough muzzle damage can make many a dog quit. I think a well constructed badger trial could definitely test gameness and I'd take such a dog over most match "winners" I've seen.

    Hello men!!!

In my humble opinion and speaking from experiance as in wednesday just gone a healthy good size winter pig is a good test for any game dog. experiance plays a important part in it in how the dog works out the best way to defeat his catch im only speaking from the lamping and general hunting aspect not drawing. i have seen one of my best bulldogs make a meal out of one it lasted near on 45mins but on the other hand witnessed my pal bull-x in as little as 20mins dont get me wrong its never a easy task i had seen many dogs fall at the feet of a good pig and heard many stories from dogmen to how quickly their dog can do the job only to be embrassed at their peromance when out on a hunt. it takes a special dog to stick to job till the end and i dont believe in any thing other than a fair one on one match beceause lets face it a dog will always fight another dog over domenice but if your dog lets go of the pig (it should never) the pig will always turn and run away so if your dog is exhusted it has got to want to hold on one matter what in my eyes thats a show of gameness, your dog must be doing it for fun because as soon as he or she stop the battle is over so unless you witness what your being told
never believe what you hear and only believe half of what you see...
    peace to you all E.E
