Intense pups

  1. I received this email from my cousin. I thought of posting it here and get everyone's advice/opinion/help.

A friend of mine has two pups (littermates) from his bitch, a male and a female. When these pups reached the age of 2 months, they would play rough and both would suffer cuts and bite wounds. This prompted my friend to separate the pups.

At one time, my friend's nephew stood near the cage of the male pup while holding a leash. The pup got hold of the leash and held on to it like a glue and shook it like hell. It took my friend several minutes before he finally removed the leash from the mouth of the pup since he avoided using a breaking stick (to prevent damaging the young teeth and gums). When these pups would clamp on something, they would never let go and scream/squeel angrily.

There are branches over the cages about 6 feet high. If the pups get bored playing with their Kongs, they would jump non-stop -trying to reach the branches.

When the pups are about four (4) months old, my friend decided to bring out the male pup from cage to give him his first walk on a leash. As soon as the cage doors were opened, the pup sprung out of the cage and clamped on the collar. After several minutes, my friend was able to remove the collar from the grip of the pup and managed to place it around the pup's neck. However, when the leash was placed on the collar, the pup clamped on the collar and shook it like hell. If my friend successfully removes the leash from his mouth, the pup would go berzerk and screems like hell as if he is too pissed off and tries desperately to get a hold on the leash. All those time, the pup is going berzerk and the only way you can prevent him from going after the leash is to grab him at the back of his neck and lift him up. But he would continue to scream like hell.

My friend got really tired wrestling with the pup so he decided to bring him back to his cage. He opted to bring the female pup out. It turns out, the female is far more pumped up than the male. After several minutes, my friend was able to place the collar on the female pup. But when he opened the cage doors, the female pup catapaulted out and went after the leash my friend was holding. The pup practically slammed its body against the door. The pup went berzerk since it failed to get hold of the leash because my held it up high. The pup jumped towards my friend in its attempt to clamp on to the leash and it accidentally bit my friend's upper arm. Everything happened so fast and the pup went ballistic. When the pup can't get hold of the leash, it would go after my friend's cargo pants or shirt.

My friend was able to grab hold of the pup on the back of his neck and brought it inside the cage. My friend had 3 teeth wounds on his hand and a huge wound on his upper arm. Those are accidental wounds as a result of the pup's desperate attempt to bite on the shirt, leash or short pants of my friend.

My friend has been breeding bulldogs for 8 years now and this is the first time he (and me) encountered such pumped up and high driven pups.

What is the best method/way to break these pups so as to prevent them from biting practically anything they can get close to? My friend needs to break these pups because they may carry such trait upon reaching maturity and he won't be able to handle them without getting unjured, etc.

  9. Sounds like bored and frustrated pups. He should pay more attention to the pups and give them more exercise and interaction (discipline, playing etc...). Bulldogs or not they need some kind of healthy stimulation and interaction if they are expected to act "normal".
