My dog had ACL surgery and we go to a underwater treadmill for exercise. I wish I could have my own. Esp. since it isn't cheap. It is made of clear plexiglass sides, treadmill in the floor. Has a fill and drain tank. They put a vest on the dog and the physical rehab Doctor sets the time intervals and speed. He does really well. Has built almost all of his muscle back that he lost.
We have a cattle waterer that is about 8' around and 3ft deep but he won't swim, just walks around. So whatever you go with make sure it is deep enough for them to swim in.

Sea Dogg is a high-visibility buoyant swim collar for dogs. The collars rap around the neck of the dog to help them keep their head above water. This way they enjoy the outdoors with you on a boat, Jet Ski or just swimming. Collar comes in two sizes, small and large. $13.

buck heres a pretty cool idea since youlre big on DIY. tank made of plywood and fiberglass. The plans just have to be modified a bit since you just need something alot simpler. Can get some good ideas from the monsterfish guys.

that is sweet, fiber glass , like they repair canoes with, , thanks!!!

I'd put one of those in the shop!! all year round then, just keep dog indoors till dry,

you could save and keep all side plywood, but that is real cool!

big enough for a dog 40-50 lbs easy!!

my question is, is there any possible way to add current?

unless its for therapy i dont think regular swimming is gonna cut it for conditioning. seems like there would need to be some kind of resistance.

  12. Naustroms

the resistance is the water. try walking in a pool then walk on the street.

i gotta pool lol there is resistance but not enough for a thourough workout (it seems like).

swim in a pool, then go swim in the river against current.
beside walking in a pool is different then swimming in the pool.

it your trying for wind, you shouldn't need a lot of resistance, just some.

but it your looking to pick up the pace, use something to make current of some sort? they have those pole torpedo you can make something with them maybe! like a hot tub, but all jets go one way, and suck out he bottom of tank?

maybe sounds expensive lol, i have a pond pump in my aquarium that puts out 2,000 gph. like a power head on steroids. maybe if i can find something even stronger?

swimming is a great workout. we have todo pool days for wrestling and its no joke. walking/running in a pool is basically the same workout a dog goes through while in the pool. if you feel like even more resistance is needed you can use elastic bands attached to a harness. we would attach the bands to each other and swim/run in opposite directions. you could do this same thing by allowing the dog to swim against the elastic band while trying to get after something he really wants.

IMO I think it is the best workout for the dog! Wish I had the room for one.:(

im not saying its not, if you read one of the 1st threads i posted youll see that i swear by water activities.
the thing is theres a difference between our workouts in the pool, and theyres.
when we walk/run in the pool, yes it works us well.
but you show me 1 dog that stands about 4ft high(not a dane) or that can even stand up in the shallow end!?!
the dog cant touch the bottom with all four which limits him to regular swim.
he doesnt have to pull his body weight against the water cuz when you float your weightless.
see where im goin with this, yes swimming is a great workout, like i said i swear by it.
    but
running/walking in water (chest deep) is a lot tougher than just swimming.
which (i feel) gives them one of the best water workouts.
