Other than dogs the word game or gameness is only use in combats sport (boxing, MMA, etc.). If Lebron James score 60 points you don't call him game. But if Gatti or Correlas (god bless the died) fight one of they're trade mark fight they be said to be game proformances. Combat sports is the ultimate sport. When civilization has to rebuild itself the first sports will be combat sports. everything all rolled in one offense, defense, speed, agility, quickness, accuracy, endurance, toughness, smarts, heart, etc.

hunting and hog dogs can be as game as a box dog.The box is just a way to prove one dogs gameness against another.

"Hunting and hog dogs" may be as game as a box dog.... but you'll never even catch a glimpse of gameness from hunting your dog.

Hunting dogs are just that....Mine have been hunted on everything from badger to boar. Their job is to find and anchor game. I don't need to go into detail... but they are very brave dogs that rarely weigh more than twenty pounds. They have all the heart in the world but they are not game. I have seen them try to climb inside the mouths of feral hogs. I have seen them tooth to tooth with badger. I have seen them do what they were bred to do. But they are not game.

The true meaning of gameness has always been about the most controversial question surrounding our dogs. With that being said, I believe gameness is the desire to dominate and dispatch your foe Encompassed by the will to survive in the face of another combatant trying to do the same to you. That's my take on it. it is such a deep, i would say emotion moreso than trait. A trait is brown hair. brown hair is easlily passed down. Gameness is elusive. love is emotional but can be passed down, but is also elusive. In all the defining gameness can be as hard as defining love. been drinking lol. Am i Communicating this right. soup for thought . True Grit.

i dont know what to change?
Gameness is the greatest gift that mother Nature can give to our dogs.

The Job must be done doesnt matter if the dog is tired, wounded, injured, only racing on left 2 or 3 wheels. When 2 Bulldogs get in Rumble only one can Win!

Thank Nature for the last Domestic Wild Animal.

Your definition is the best i heard.

  9. Are you "game" for a run to the top?
    That boy earns his "keep".
A couple of ways we use the terms that pertain to our dogs.
There is only one way to test gameness and it was defined best by Gaboon Trahan. There are only 2 levels of gameness. The first is "game enough" and the second is "dead game".

It's far easier to explain what "gameness" isn't. Perhaps it's better left that way. A true bulldog is greater than the sum of it's parts....I heard it said once that "them that knows.... knows." I'd only add that those that do, (know)... will go to their graves with the memories. Change the definition of game if you feel like you need to....but it all come out in the wash. And a cur by any other name.... is still a fkn cur.
Just when you thought you'd heard it all...

    Excellent answer right there---^

When you see it first hand you'll understand why it's hard to put into words for those who have never witnessed it. It's like explaining what a flower smells like to someones who can't smell, or what a sunset looks like to someone who can't see. Hense why you have so many different explainations as to what gameness is. Once you've seen it though, you'll never forget it. The definition don't need updated. It's meaning is the same now as it was 100 years ago..

to me game is the will to not stop....not stop till he wins not stop untill he dominates.. not stop till he dies.. principles that every man should live by imo lol and on a further note in some crazy way represents the american spirit the will to survive the will to win its the exact thing every american should have in these somewhat troubling times .

Sir, I am a newbie who did a search of "Gameness" and came across your post from 05/17/2010 and found it very informative, which is why I am posting here today as a newbie.

Can you tell me how to develop "Gameness" in my dog?

Most DG dogs didnt have any impression that they were winning. Gameness is elusive but its there when you see it played out. Some of the gamest dogs I've seen were cold. They would keep scratching into a destroyer until they were pulp. Just wagging their tail without opening their mouths. Retarded but deep game. They wont win any money but some threw good'uns.

A good definition i found years ago and came across today.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the pursuit of greatness amongst peers, one must
be willing to boldly fulfill any incessant desire the magnetism of which is so intense that it
overtakes every fiber of his existence. There is neither an obstacle substantial enough nor a
distraction powerful enough to justify a cessation of the journey. The only legitimate impediment
is death itself. One’s persistence must not subside until his deed is complete or until his final
breath has exited his physical body.
