From my knowledge of the American bulldogs, they were at one time called the American Pit Bull Dog, but to be a little bit more specific, it was the Painter/Margentina line that were called this. This strain tends to average around 75# and were bred for the pit, hence APBD. However, they never became popular or were used in mainstream since the apbts would win 9/10. Best of breed vs Best of breed, apbt takes the cake.

i do find it hard to believe that they were ever matched into, apbt with that weight , but ive heard the same.

i would like to think they were matched into each other and probly couldnt fight their way out of a wet paper bag. i think they would have the gameness of a brick.
hence why it never went any further.

I wasn't there at the moment but this is what i read, and how i see it.

In 1970 the american bulldog was first registered as American Pit Bulldog. They later renamed them to American Bulldogs to avoid confusion with the American Pit Bull Terrier.

About the painter/margentina line;In the late 1970's Joe painter, Margentina and Trappe developed a second strain of working american bulldogs that was used in the pit. It is widely rumored that margentina and Trappe infused Pitbull blood in to the pure painter line.

That they were not any good in the pit speaks for itself. Why invent the wheel twice, there was already an ultimate fighting dog. The American Pit Bull Terrier.

A heaver dog - I thought they were left over from the Bull baiting days (remnants ) which would answer a question any way , as the Half and Half pit dogs came about they were better fighters then the bull baiting dogs.

They were matched into catchweight apbts, but they never did last long. They'd be on top of the apbt and punishing them for a good 20 mins. or so, then get tired and cur out.

I heard a rumor about that too. The infusion of apbt blood was supposed to add on gameness and wind.

    Re: Apbd & apbt

Maybe the girl is not telling the whole story or truth, maybe the breeder is looking to infuse some APBT into her line, with 16 dogs she could cover her trail easy, seems logical She has gone on & on how she loves her APBD’s (breeds and sells) then recently she tells me she has a expensive China bred female all of a sudden for the reason she told me . What a new secret love to own a APBT? Wile breeding & selling APBD.
Maybe that might be the truth of the APBD, a breed that every so often needs a little APBT put back in. as you all mentioned that was done in the past to try to create a better fighting dog. If that’s true, the continuation of the APBD would need a little APBT put back once in a wile maybe the APBD is not a real pure bred. (don’t let any owners of that breed here that comment)
