Choxie was supposed to have her first injection last week. This would start killing the large adult heart worms.

Unfortunately, her chest radiographs show an enlarged heart and changes in the lung tissue and blood vessels. (This due to her having a heartworm for so long.) She will have to take prednisone for the next two weeks to help decrease the amount of inflammation present. We will also continue the prednisone throughout the treatment to help minimize a reaction to the heartworm treatment.

Hopefully, she will be able to go back in two weeks for her first injection.

has your vet said anything about giving her doxycycline before the treatment? at my vet's office they always recommend giving doxycycline to the patient for about a month before treatment. this kills the symbiotic organism that often lives in and aids the adult heartworms. once this organism is gone, the heartworms are weaker, making them easier to kill, thus easier on the patient during treatment.

just something you may want to look into, especially since it seems she's had them for so long..

otherwise, good luck with her treatment! i wish you and her both the best!

She is on the heartworm treatment. The doxycycline was given to her two months into her treatment and continued into the third month.

It is called Wolbachia bacteria. And it reduces the size of the adult heartworm. Which in turn when the adult dies it reduces the chance of a thromboembolism. They decompose and small worm fragments lodge in the heart and lungs blocking blood flow.

Not saying your vets wrong but a lot of them do mistake Pit Bulls for having enlarged hearts.

Didnt know the dog had heartworms when you got her, you mean the "dogman" always claimed to feed Timberwolf but wasnt worming his dogs.

so that dogs not in the clear of making it? Fkn sad she was neglected

Shit happens and shit can happen to just about anyone. I hope that you don't ever find your self over your head or in need with this breed.

sht doesnt happen, if you lose your job, get hooked on drugs/vodka or run into money problems where you cant care for your dogs then place them before they become ill. Theirs no excuse for that, none and especially someone that spent his time ruining people for lack of proper care for their dogs on his forum. Its called hypocrisy and neglect, unreal someone claims they'd do anything for their dogs and we see the pics, they tell the real story and thats most well cared for dog on the yard according to the new owner.

Choxie had her first injection on 2/04. This first injection was $172.50.

She stayed at the vet for the full day for observation, and did well. She returns at the end of 30 days for the 2nd and 3rd injections and will have to stay overnight. During this 30 days her exercise has to be restricted. She's still on the prednisone, and will continue to be through the entire treatment to help decrease the amount of inflammation ans minimize any reaction to the treatment.
