Contact info for the Texas senator and representative who will (according to the article) be receiving the ban proposal on Friday–ask them not to file or support breed-specific legislation.

East Texans push for ban on Pit Bulls

Kent also said if a ban is not enacted, a provision would allow people to own Pit Bulls only if they're kept secure.

"We are talking about 8 foot fences, covered on the top that go one foot into the ground. Secure locks, so children can't get into them," Kent said.

Despite the danger, there are Pit Bull owners who said a ban would prompt people to breed the dogs for the wrong reasons.

"If you make it illegal, it becomes more meaningful to the people who are doing it anyway, and they are just going to find deeper places in the woods to do it," Colleen Faulkner said.

Kent said she will present the first draft of the legislation to State Senator Eltife and State Representative Hopson on Friday.

i talked to eltife's aid yesterday and he is saying that he has not read the proposed law and the lady that is pushing this has not presented it to him. what we need is a lot more phone calls. come on folks you got ya cell phones so its not like yo even got to get off your asses to make this call. it might be the most important call you make in many years for our dogs.it wont take but a few minutes0 make the call- you probally gonna get an answering machine but still fill it up. they do listen to it,and they return calls. be polite, be smart and join in and help. the number is 903-223-7913.lets see who will make this call- make the call then leave ya name here- Dan

So, both the aides that Danny Goodson and I talked to said they didn't know anything about Senator Eltife saying what he was quoted as saying in the paper.

I got tired of waiting for the Senators' aide to call me back so I called the reporter Kenneth Dean who wrote the article. That quote is straight from the horses' (the Senator's) mouth.
He has not read the proposed legislation but he said that he is tired of hearing about these attacks and "something has to be done." (the scariest words ever uttered by a government official). I asked the reporter specifically if he was talking about a dangerous dog law and he said no, he was talking about pit bulls.

The reporter didn't know anything about our state dangerous dog law that allows a dog to be declared dangerous without touching a person or animal. He admitted that they do not have a leash law out there because people don't want one. The incident in Henderson where the boy was killed a couple of days ago, they had about 40 dogs and if you saw the video they did not look like they were being kept nicely. Most have been put down and 1/3-1/2 of them were allegedly pit bulls. Here is the latest on that one:

So even though I felt bad for Eltife's staff -- when I called them the phone was ringing off the hook -- he needs to know that "something has to be done" is not going to cut it. Sorry, Senator.

 

I called the number and they said it was a law firm. According to what i read the guy's who dog killed the boy had around 40 dogs!

One talking point could be that there could be a limit on the number of dogs you could keep, because how could somebody give that many dogs the attention they need?

What are other talking points that you would suggests?

the senator has like 3-4 offices in northeast teast- the 903-223-7931 number is one of them.no sir i will not propose dog limits- thats a type of bsl when it is proposed for pitbulls only. i will not accept any type of breed spefic laws to be passed without throwing a fit. for over 30 years we in texas have stood by this and this is why our state law spefically says bsl is illegal and no laws supporteing it are legal. if you give up an inch then you might as well give up a mile. danny

 

i'm sorry sir i did not actually reply to you question. my solutions to problems like this is to enforce sensable dog laws not breed spefic ones. in texas if a dog attacks you -unprovoked- then thats a felony if the local law will persue it. and this i believe they should do. we have very strict laws covering aggressive and vicious dogs that can be enforced. probally the strictest in the usa.we have containment laws state wide- our ten foot state chain law is a dam good law-one the dog owners in this state helped get passed. what we need done also is to insist when a dog attack happens if find out everything- the dogs that killed the child that was named justin were not pits but our dogs are bearing the brunt of that attack. if a chuld is unsupervised and wanders into another persons fenced in yard the childs supervisor should be charged- not the dog owners tho- the dog was not wrong - that was a intruder- i feel for the child i really do but thats my view point.sorr man but i get to rambling- just my thoughts- right or wrong- dan

 

I wrote both both Eltife, and Hopson a few days ago. Everyone in the APBT community needs to take a few minutes out of their day to write or call or possibly both. This is everyone's fight not just those that live in Texas.

A friend of mine who lives in texas started a petition to stop the ban of Pit Bulls. PLEASE sign and share with everyone you know so that we can stop this nonsense. Please do not just hit the like button as it does NOT count as a signature. ALSO at the end where it asks for a donation - that is for the site not her petition YOUR SIGNATURE IS WORTH MORE THAN MONEY. stop breed specific legislation in texas

First of all, not all pits are mean. I own 2 pits and they are babies. They play with the kids 1-11 years old, and they kids are rougher than the dogs.
Like stated by Wolfe on the kltv website:
"We know that drinking and driving is dangerous. We know that combination kills, so we outlaw it, and we put people in jail that do it,"
INSTEAD OF PUTTING THEM IN JAIL AND LETTING THEM OUT SHORTLY AFTER WHY NOT BAN THEM OUT OF THE STATE OF TEXAS, OR PUT THEM DOWN LIKE THEY DO OUR DOGS.
Also, As far as the pits that have got out and have hurt/killed people, do they look at the owner to see if that is how the dog was raised/bred? No, they just blame the dog and put it down. Then the owner goes and gets another pits, raises it the same way and you have the same problem all over again. They need to look at the owner, as well as the dog.

If texas as a state bans these dogs, I will move out of this country seriously, Texas seems like one of the last places that would allow anything of the sort. Texas is still pretty wild, IMO, from what I have seen; more problems down there than a bunch of dogs. If Texas goes, boy are we in trouble with these dogs. Sounds like bs but they are taking many freedoms now days.

 

Air on the side of caution. However whom ever is brave enough to pick this bill up and support it all the way, is foolish. Esp in the light of recent events. I'm not encouraging anyone to commit a crime or hurt someone. But ppl kill for less in this world. Try taking away something that may be all a person has, it could make a person crazy enough.
