Prepairing for a new Puppy

Discussion in 'Training & Behavior' started by PrettyPitPrinces, Dec 8, 2010.

  1. I have a 2 year old female and I want to get another puppy. My female has been very socialized with other dogs, and has gone to a cage free dog daycare since she was 6 months old. What my queston is, is how can I prepare her, and myself for that matter, for another puppy? I want to get a male, is that a good idea? Keep in mind, my female IS fixed, and I plan to have the male nutered as well!
    I would appreciate any suggestions!

i wasnt going to chime in but you said you take your dog to a cage free dog day care? This means your dog is with other dogs all day?

If so, your really setting your dog up for failure! JMHO

  3. yes 3 days a week so goes there for 8 hours a day and gets training and gets to play... im curious why you say this is setting her up for faulure

because this breed is known for dog aggression.

  5. I understand that but in order to be admitted all dogs must pass a temperment test and at first sign of a problem dogs are no longer aloud to attend, and there are certified dog trainers and people certified in dog 1st aid, so I personally dont see a problem with it. I dont think it is any different than taking her to a dog park... I could just be totally nieve tho...l

Most people will say you are the second option...

Some dog parks don't allow pitbull or pitbull mixes and you have to keep them on a leash. It all depends on the dog. Can't tell you how your female will react to the pup. Could be good or bad.

I dont mean any offence, but your right, its no different than taking your dog to a dog park and the dog park is no place for an american pitbull terrier!!!

you must realize that although your dog isnt dog agressive now or hasnt shown any agression twards other animals, its engrained into their entire being, and at any time wether the dog is 6 months old, 2 years old, or 6 years old, that dogs agression can turn on at anytime!

the reason you should avoid places like this, even if your dog isnt agressive, if another dog were to challenge your dog, its doubtful that your dog will walk away, more than likely he will fight, and then you will just have another, "pitbull attacks" story on your hands.

you can have 100 trainers there, but you cannot train out dog agression. Its what this breed was built for, and to try to train it out, your just fooling yourself.

Problem with that is....first time your dog has "a problem" somebodys Cockapoo is going to end up dead, then its all over the local media, your dog ends up getting put down and you have a bill to pay or potential legal action.

You have to remember, bulldogs, be they Am Bullies or whatever have the power to do a lot of damage in short order, they dont want doggy friends and dont need them

  10. Taking your dog to a dog park is considered one of the number one "bad owner" offenses in this breed. So if you compare this to taking your dog to a dog park you should probably think about it.

Also you say the people are trained in first aid, that is all well and good but that doesn't stop some news reporter from writing a shock story about the "pit bull mauling" at the doggy day care and some stuffy folks from petitioning to adopt a breed ban in your area as a result of you failing to place your dog in proper situations for its breed (ie do not set your dog up to get in a fight!).

You should start by reading this thread on Pit Bull Chat -

You also might want to register there, with a name like PrettyPitPrincess, that board might be more your speed. Not being mean, you just sound like the average uneducated furmommy and I think you could learn from the "nicer" environment on that board. This board is more for serious breed enthusiasts and we are not always so nice. ;)

PS. Before I ruffle any feathers of folks who post on both boards here - I am simply saying PBC posters would be gentler and nicer in teaching this girl the basics of the breed than most here would.
