Has anyone had adverse effects with cephalexin

My dog has a cut on her leg. It should heal OK. If it does not heal soon I was thinking about using cephalexin, however I was worried about side effects. I will most likely let it heal on its own with a little topical antibiotics.

Well ... Cephalexin can cause upset stomach, if given on empty stomach. Or it can give a animal loose stoole. Personally I would do some hydrotherapy with that leg twice daily and give a penG injection. 1ml/20lb subq.

But PenG injections should not be used longer than 3-5 days. But depending on the cut you may not even need more than one injection. PenG is such a broad spectrum antibiotic that many things are resistant to it. It is not the best antibiotic for skin. But depending on the severity of the wound would determine the course of treatment or a course of antibiotics at all.

Like Simms said Cephalexin can cause GI upset. I have seen a few severe reactions But only a handful. And nothing that did not resolve on it's own.

Thanks for the info guys. The wound looks like it is healing.

  5. I am using cephalexin to help cure a bad case of happy tail and I am not seeing any issues. No loose stool or change in activity.

I had to give it to Arson to keep his foot from getting infected while it was healing...he tore the skin all in between his pads and it was a very high traffic, hard area to heal, and he was on chephlexin for almost 3 weeks, first two weeks 3 times a day and twice a day after that...we had no issues other then the worst gas ever. I also added yogurt to his diet to help.

Dunno if that helps, but it was a pretty intense dosing for longer then I usually like to use antibiotics for, and we had no issues.

That is good to know. It seems like the APBT handles it well. By the way, she is just about healed. :)
