Not unless You have the money to spend on all the potential vet bills from hereditary defects and heart problems the breed as a whole is plagued with. Not to mention the heartache of getting attatched to an animal that may only live to 6yrs old. Remember that bully breeders are not the first breeders to wreck a breed and make them totally useless. As mentioned above the English Bulldog is a physically useless lovable show pet, a bit like a 60lb short haired Pekinese. The Olde Bulldogge is a functial, modern recreation mix of approx 50% English Bulldog,12.5% American Pit Bull Terrier,12.5% American Bulldog and 12.5% Bull Mastiff. These are very functional 80-100lb dogs originally bred ba American Dave Leavitt. Designer cross breeds are a dime a dozen these days another re-creation is the Australian Bulldog, a bit more laid back than the Olde with no Pitbull or American Bulldog. Boxer and Staffordshire Bull Terrier were used in stead. Here in Australia the English Bulldog is rated the worse breed for health problems with a average to good lifespan of about 6 years. A great example of what show people can do to a breed given enough time.

    50% + 12.5% + 12.5% + 12.5% = 87.5%
    purebred + purebred + purebred = mutt

    how are they functional?
theyre just bred to look a bit more like a dog than a pig with a few less health complaints as far as i know.

why would you want one? if its just for the way it looks why not get an AB?

I was working with two EB puppies a few months ago and they got me thinking, what if someone starting breeding them for working purposes again. Do you think it's possible to selectively breed nothing but EB's with the correct bodies and drive and get the breed back to being used for working purposes?

I don't think You could accomplish it in Your lifetime, as bad as the stock is You will find it nearly impossible.

OR, you could just get some ABs off working stock

I am quite happy with my Dorset Olde Tyme Bulldogges.
No fighting dog but very pysically capable not to be underestimated, good health as well no issues worth mentioning.

  20. As you can see in my avatar, my wife loves English Bulldogs and we've had many. Most are best at holding down the couch and visiting the vet but not all. One of our past EB's and one we have now are quite athletic and full of energy, at least relative to most EB's. But, they are handicaped by their genetics. They have drive and the desire to do things but have no gas tank and are physically not capable. Still, they try. I would not recommend EB's to anyone, but some of the more functional, "thowback", style bulldogges look pretty good. At least some breeders are working in the right direction.
