Bull Terriers crossed with Australian Cattle Dogs have been used with great success catching pigs and wild cattle for years. The Cattle dog adds a bit more leg for speed and stamina (most people would say it also adds a bit more brains). Staffy mixes just as good, not that the staffy lacks any brains. APBT's don't need to be mixed at all. Just my opinion don't mean to insult Bull Terrier owners, working strains may be smart but lets face it , when it comes to brains they arn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

Would be great to see some pics of those German bred Bull Terriers, Germany seems to have a good record of keeping working breeds functional, unlike most of the western nations.

I can clearly see that you arent talking down the lifestyle of hog hunting. One thing that needs to be mentioned though, about gameness and its varying degrees, is that its not defined by its opponent. Gameness is not an apple or an orange, it sees no contest, opponents, or prey. Its a temporary state of being/experience. If a bulldog got loose anywhere it would have nothing to do with the opponent, but with that fact that he is going to go out of his way to select one and engauge it in any form of combat he see's fit. If he is true, the manifestation known as 'gameness' will take over the animal and override the natural instinct to live. Even though historical pit contest and deep woods/baying and catching are two different things, the desire for this manifestation/experience is the same.

When you try to bring out the difference you can see how different they are, but when you look at the similarities you can see they are more alike, than not.

I hate to say it, but if our bulldogs were catching on prey drive alone, they'd be culled out quick. Prey drive alone wont keep a dog in hold whenever he is getting swung on by a huge boar because he/she holding in the wrong spot.

haha, I guess you could call that cute. Please excuse her boredom spots by her ass. If she doesnt have something to do or chase she goes to town on herself

This was her first time catching. Her son there is too young, but we brought him out to watch anyway. He sure is interested though, for a pup.

APBT's canbe good hog dogs, on a case by case basis. One of the issues besides dog aggresiveness, is that they are stupid hunters. Stupid meaning they get themselves into a lot of trouble. While a dog still in hold after being gored in the gut may SOUND badass, a gored up dog doesn't do a hunter much good.

True mlmaas, but when its time to leg him the last thing you want is some fucking cur that's gonna let go as soon as he gets stuck.

Not as much as you might hope!
There has been a change since the first BSL over here and people went more and more into show dogs as they became quite popular from the late 80ties on.
These working type dogs have been way to much for the average customer and therefore they went to serve the market.

American Staffordshire Terriers working type can be found at www.1astc.de just click trough the page and you will find some pictures as this site is only in german but they crossed some performance bred APBT´s in for example Juilsing & Bruintjes Hank (Tucker) and Bad Boys Arc etc. etc.

Within the Bullterrier´s I´ll look out if I´ll find some

There´s one Kennel left that is called Knighthoods but these are what we considered of lower average working type Bullterriers so just check it out!

Absolutely first class working Am Staffs

    www.1astc.de

click "Historie" then Click "Körung" then click "Zuchttauglichkeitsprüfung" then click "Bilder allgemein (1)"
then click "Bilder allgemein (2)" you aslo can check Züchter and most of all "Sporthunde in Aktion"

They are all on the left task list and gives you a small impression of what is going on there!

The working Bullterrier guys are pretty much underground and stay with their own aswell as most of the working Am Staff people aren´t out selling their stuff to the public anymore!

Now to answer a the specific question this thread was started for..... Go to youtube and look up "jake... the hog stop dog"

He would have been considered a more well known hunting bull terrier in FL. He has died since, but I believe they have a son of him replacing him.... and certainly following in his footsteps.

It seems crazy to try to point an arrow at a pig when your dogs are intermixing - seems a good way to accidentally kill a dog.

Jake the Bull Terrier video was impressive.

People who bow/gun hunt hogs with dogs are for the most part pussies.Whats the fucking point in using dogs when your gonna shoot the hog with something anyways, you can shoot hogs all day long with no dogs. What it is ...is they want to dog hunt, but don't want to leg the hog because deep down in side they're chicken shit.
