    The Alligator Family

The last article brought me so many comments and questions, that I felt compelled to do a follow-up. The most asked question was why I used other dogs or families, when I had so many directions to go, and remain in the ALLIGATOR family.

The first thing is I have never jumped ship or looked to water down the ALLIGATOR dogs, but from the very beginning, I chose a pragmatic approach to using these dogs, and to be honest it was sort of an accident that I did.

In the late sixties, and early seventies, I was pleased enough with what I was breeding to not be inclined to go looking for anything else. But, as I look back to the Ft. Worth-Dallas area where I lived, I realize it was a hot bed of not just good, but really great dogs, representing some of the best there was to be found. I was also fortunate enough to have access to a lot of these dogs through friends, so my dilemma was to stay focused and not become too diversified.

Even though I had been around the ALLIGATOR dogs early on, I never intended to use them because of the way they were bred which just didn't suit me. As individuals, all three litter mates, ALLIGATOR, RENNIE, and SOKO, were dogs that fit my design like a glove.

My introduction to breeding' to that family came when Terry Flory, who owned rennie, (susan renee) came by in search of a stud dog for her. She was being used as a ranch dog at the time, and had made quite a name for herself. There were people who saw her work, that were wanting something off her as soon as possible, and were willing to put deposits down before she even had a heat cycle.

I had bred a litter from bruno and the KATY ANN bitch that was equally impressive, that were a quarter D.C. Humes' texas jack, who was a famous AKC show champion of the day. I really felt the BRUNO dog would be the ticket, but Terry thought the better chance would come from macho, who was off bruno and katy ann, since the staff had worked so well for me as a catalyst to bring out hybrid vigor. I ran it over in my mind many a night before deciding that either way it could be a bust, or produce dogs that would make you famous in the working dog community. She had a large litter from MACHO, and raised them all. we could not believe the good fortune, as all of them turned better than what we even hoped for. MESQUITE, SAM, KIZZIE, SPADE, and sparky... what a great bunch of dogs!

This was the fork in the road for me to start using the ALLIGATOR family or let it go. I had done my homework well in advance, and sought council from about everyone who had used the dogs like them from either side of the pedigree. Red Martin said, "Boy, those are good dogs down from the Tudor stuff", (he and Earl were good friends), "but you just have to watch that dibo blood because just a little too much and you start getting those ole' cray-see dogs". I have seen what he was talking about first hand, and really never liked dogs that were wound too tight. The DIBO dogs were a great family, in spite of some not pleasing me, and have been used in successful breeding programs all over the country back then and to this day. I too was successful with it using it in small diversified doses.

The other question I am often asked is "What happened to those macho-renee dogs, and are there any still around?" I will see a pedigree from time to time and out will pop sparky or spade back in the fifth or sixth generation, and I think I should have focused more on those dogs since many people over the years even some who poo pooed Terry and myself when we made the breeding, have said a greater bunch of individuals never came down the pike. The SPADE dog is represented in the red BARRON dog of today, which you find in a blend with the great TONKA. Other than that, the family is ancient history and only live today in the minds of us who were lucky enough to feed one or two!

Dr Lector interesting name. I am on to whats going on with some of these famous dogmen in Texas !! I've had several of these dogs I really did not get to see if they panned out because my house was getting raided all the time.My friend had a Gr Ch out of these dogs anyone would be happy to own. That made me fool with these dogs more than I would have.If you have never dealt with some of these Texas dogmen be careful who you get dogs from your life may go Cray-See in a few years. Thanks for the post though interesting read look up the word " Cray " in google one day.

Had a little seed dog I was using called Rupert off of Jeans Russo and Hammonds Double Ruf when I got raided I had to get him out of Dodge so I sent him to Texas.Six months later when I got him back he was in such bad shape I had to put him down.I am still mad about it and that was 19 years ago.

The King of Lookout mountain down there said in one of his videos that the Alligator dog was not bred the way his papers show.Inbred dogs most of the time don't produce high caliber dogs like that outcrossed dogs do. Just my opinion though.

Dr Lector interesting name I am waiting for Dr Mengele to show up.I am on to some of these dog people in Texas. Interesting read though I never read this one before.I had several of these dogs 19 years ago.Never got to see if they panned out though because my house was getting raided so much. One of my friends had a Gr Ch out of these dogs anyone would be happy to own that made me keep more of these dogs than I would have. They are hardy dogs.If you never bought dogs down in Texas before be careful you might get more than you bargained for your life may go Cray-See in a year or two !! Look the word Cray up on google. (I'll give you a hint it is a gov. surveillance super computer).

I had a real nice bred little dog I was using as a seed dog.He was bought as a pup and just sat out in someones yard for 6 years and I had a chance to get him so I brought him home he was out of Jeans Russo(Rooster) and Hammonds Double Ruf his name was Rupert. After the first raid I had to get Rupert out of Dodge for a while. So I sent him to Texas he was 100% healthy I had him in good shape from a rough upbringing he had.Six months later I got Rupert back to take to my new place with me and he was in such bad shape I had to put him down. You wouldn't believe it. I am still mad to this day about what happened to my little buddy while we were down.

The King of lookout mountain down there said in one of his videos that the Alligator dog was not bred the way his papers say.High caliber dogs like that are usually outcrossed but that is just my opinion.I do like them dogs though nice read.

Rupert was bred really well alot of high caliber dogs in his pedigree up close. I was not refering to evil this way comes, my buddy had a dog off of JM that was a real good dog would have loved to have him. I think I had one of the few dogs off of Rooster was sure mad about losing him he was a nice little dog. I don't know why Rooster was not bred more.I had some dogs off of Zack that were young nice looking dogs and I had 3 young bitches off of Rupert.

Are you the guy that had the Spike dog off of Rufus ?

Your right about the Freemasons in Texas old Don Mayfield battled with them all his life and they were the reason he got out of dogs in the late seventies when they turned the heat on him through the humane society one of te most powerful Masonic brotherhoods

Apologies for the last post the dog i had from Hammonds was sired by ANDY L who was out of Rufus(ROM) and MICHELLE(sister to CH SPIKE) and HARRY(sister to CH JACK) but he quit thats it tough shit ! I remember DON showing me a gold belt buckle with a burning cross on it that was handed down from his grandaddy who was a Texas mason as were some of DONS kinfolk but he wasnt and matcched into them all his life

  16. Re: A Little More on the Alligator Family

Thankyou !!!!!!!! Finally someone sees the truth I get bad mouthed alot for saying Freemason but I am 100% about our dogs and not this side show going on in this country with these people.I recently found out Weldon Stockton was the head of a Dallas Freemasonic lodge and the first dogman I thought of was Mayfield.I was wondering if he was involved with them also.

Thats a good bred dog you had.I had one off Pig that was that way and several young ones off Roberto and Rupert when I got raided. The SPCA ,H$U$ and Peta are the biggest Freemasonic fronts out there. They set up on both sides of every problem these Freemasons so they can control the outcome ! I hope our buddy Hammonds isn't a Freemason but I am not so sure.
