That's it? Just another back yard breeder looking to breed more dogs that don't fit the standard & dogs that have in no way proven they're worthing of breeding other than having the necessary genitalia?

Please do a search to find our opinion on this sort of "breeding" that is ruining our breed. And please reconsider. For all of our sake.

You should breed dogs that have the traits on the inside. Dont breed for looks. Breed for the way they act and their ability. Dogs should be bred to better the breed not create your own image.

great answer. jmg, people around this site don't promote breeding for such purposes. for the most part,, (ALMOST ALL) are into working dogs, and do not want extra dogs running around who were made for looks and not a purpose. and kept to the standard that has been used for the last 100 years or so. short, wide, big headed dogs were not what the dogs were bred for. looks were not what the dogs were bred for . a true pit IS NOT bred for this. and any dog that is shouldn't be called a true pit imo. i'm not trying to piss on your parade, these are just my thoughts, i'm not speakin for everybody else....i'm sure they'll speak up soon enough.

Or better yet....dont breed. Go to your local shelter tomarrow, look how many pitbulls there are, or if you dont see any, ask how many they euthanize a month! There are too many people breeding ''pitbulls'' these days, and its going to cause the breed to be extinct. Leave it up to the professionals who have been doing it for 10, 20, 30+ years! And to make myself clear, I have not ever bred a dog and do not foresee myself breeding a dog. I have one (my first dog) I would absolutely love to get pups out of so I can always have a living descendant of him for the rest of my life, but I still will not breed him. The simple reason for this is-he is as cold as can be and probably always will be, although he's a great housedog he doesnt fit the standard. Even if he was an ace I would be hard-pressed to breed him to a female of the same qualities simply for the fact that I will not allow something I brought into this world or a descendant of which to end up in a shelter! Once those dogs are gone, you have no say on what happens to them if the people decide to up and move. What it boils down to is....if you truly love the BREED and your DOG you wont put either one through this. I really can't imagine why people insist on breeding....if done correctly you put a ridiculous ammount of stress on your dog, you shorten its life span by doing so, you risk a pre-mature death by birthing complications, you are going to spend more money than you make to ensure the pups and momma are healthy, you will contribute to the pound dogs dieing everyday and you are going to let your dogs son or daughter wind up in a shelter to be euthanized because his new owners cant care for him! If I'm missing something, PLEASE tell me what good will come out of breeding him, as I'm very intrested to know. I'm sure your dog is a lovely dog and means the world to you, so please help him and your breed out by not contributing to the problem we are facing today for personal gains! Please do the right thing......our dogs future depends on it, and this goes for EVERYONE (myself included) and not only you. Have a good day.

I realize that there are innocent dogs being euthanized every day, i have saved several by adoption. However, am i wrong for wanting to keep the legacy of my own dog, who is in my opinion the BEST dog ever, going for generations to come? a Purpose?....id say so!

I would say if there was a guarantee that the female would give birth to one pup, then go ahead and do it. I was actually thinking about this the other day. It would be nice to have a descendent of your favorite dog for the rest of your life. But, chances are that the female is gonna give birth to more than one pup. Unless you are gonna keep a whole litter and give them all the attention they need and deserve, don't do it. I would never do it, simply because I don't trust giving a dog to some complete stranger. I don't wanna take a chance on having a pup, that I bred for, end up in the shelter or dead from stupid people. Reconsider this heavily.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

another thing.. just becuase you think your dog is the greatest in the world, doesnt make it so.. we are often kennel blind to our own dogs and in that, tend to overlook certain things.
while Im not trying to say your dog is a bad one or not fit for breeding, it is important to have your dog judged against others to determine if he truely is breeding potential.. this must be impartial..
other than that, you will never ever get another dog just like the one you have now..even if it is his pups, they will never be him.

Now we see why Louisiana has one of the highest rates of unwanted, abused, & neglected pit bulls in the nation. :(

  14. I just want to offer my unbiased opinion... the point yall are trying to make is well taken.. I agree with not breeding my dogs because there are so many that need good homes. There is a stray behind my building right now hiding in bushes... and it breaks my heart to know that he has no where to live... but JMG and I try to help animals (dogs, cats, etc) like these.. I don't want to breed our dogs for the simple fact that I do NOT want them to go to a bad home. But something everyone on this site needs to take in to consideration, while this is a GAMEDOG forum, that is not the only valid reason for owning or wanting to continue your dog's "legacy". If this were true then beagles and labs should only be bred to hunt and every dog should ONLY be bred to do what they are supposed to but that is not fair to those of us who love them as pets.. My dogs get plenty of exercise and display their skills as PIT BULLS, but at the same time I personally would never use my dogs for the purpose of hunting or pulling as a sport... Nevertheless my puppies are treated extremely well and so are the many animals I have personally rescued and found homes for.. anyone that knows me knows that I am not partial to what kind of dogs I rescue and what kind of dogs are welcomed into my home. As pit bull LOVERS we need to all respect one anothers reasons for owning these beautiful, intelligent, charming, yet mischevious dogs. While some choose to use them for what they are bred for others just love them as pets, and yet others use them for a purpose beyond my realm of thought to kill one another... All I ask is to take into consideration the WHOLE of the issue instead of the something as insignificant as a person asking a question. We are all out to show the world what amzing animals these are.. Its unfair to put down other's motives in such a harsh way.. Inform us but don't condemn another persons ways... The breeding of our dog to another dog was not an attempt to make money, it was an attempt to find a suitable match to his wonderful temperment as well as his athleticism so the rest of the world can experience it as well... I guess I just think of them as humans an not possesions.... I think it is so wonderful that people maintain "the breed" and what it was meant for but what if people were only bred for what we are supposed to do "hunt & gather) well the world just wouldnt be anything like it is today.. animals evolve just as people do.. we are all free to do what we want so as long as we are not trying to cause harm shouldnt we also be free to own dogs for whatever reason we want?

If I was a beagle or lab breeder and the dogs had a bad reputation and are being constantly killed for no reason, as our dogs do, I would not be condoning Joe Blow to breed his lab because he thinks it is pretty, nice and so on. So, no I do not see your point.

I have several dogs that I would love to have puppies off of. But the fact is, is that those dogs will never ever be bred. Why? Because there might be a quality that prevent them from being close to perfect to the set standard, or they have not proven themselves worthy of being bred. Being pretty doesn't "prove" a dog worthy. There are thousands upon thousands of beatiful well built pit bulls dying every day all because their parents were pretty & nice.

The original poster is not only talking about breeding unshown dogs, but also about breeding away form the set standard. Breeding for color and for size has put this breed in the position its in today. ANYONE who breeds just for this is a back yard breeder. There's no arguing this fact. And whoever makes that choice loses any respect from me & actually from the rest of society. Back yard breeders & puppy peddlers are just plain trash. If one wants to be trash, fine. But bringing more unwanted & unneeded puppies into this world causes thoses pups to be treated like trash as well. They are usually dumped somewhere with no second thought. And a person responsible for that, be it the new owner of the pups and/or the breeder of that pup, is nothing more than trash himself. And the rest of us are spending all of our time & money having to clean up this trash. It's not fair to us, but it's definitely not fair to the dogs.

Think of your dogs first & yourself second.
