Well, this is a bit different, given that nothing is being cut-off---last time I checked. ;)

I had my new puppies ears cropped. It was the first time we opted to get any of our dogs ears cropped. Not that I regret it, but I wouldn't do it again. I don't believe that it is animal cruelty but it definitely is unnecessary stress. I also agree that their ears are put of their personality. Sometimes it looks good and sometimes it doesn't but is it really worth it at the dog's expense, I don't think so.

I can attest to this. We had a male who was cropped when we got him. I believe they called it a "battle crop", real short, barely any ear left. We had a yard accident and Kain (cropped) had the inside of his ear punctured by the other dog. His ear swelled so bad you couldn't get the antibiotic tube in the canal. He was swelled like that for a good week, and in horrible pain. The infection was horrible because we could barely get the medicine in.

In my opinion, cropped dogs look real nice with the right crop, and I would own another one, but I will never do it myself. Not only is it unneccesary, but I could spend that $300+ on other more important dog supplies.

Good lord that's just plain horrible!! I personally wouldn't do it to my dog for any reason. Yes some look good like that but most don't. Like B said if they were meant to be that way they would have been born that way. I like the expressions Natas makes with his ears and I love to tug on them when I pet him.

I have seen many older pits get ears croped and they stand up fine. Proper after care is a must. As far as it being dangerous I dont think so, because of the fact that many of them lost ears in the pit. Its up to the owner to keep it clean while healing!

    dont do it
there ears are generaly clipped for fighting reasons less to grab on to
i think is crulety would you like your ears clipped? they have floppy ears for many reasons
i.e. infections and to help keep water out they are born with them for a reason!!!

  7. I really have not read what ya'll said about this but will read them after stating my view:

NO. Cropping a dog's ear is not (and should not) be considered cruel.

In reality, floppy ears are unnatural.

IF DOGS WERE "WILD" ANIMALS, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE FLOPPY EARS. Floppy ears came about after domestication.

My dog has a 3/4 cut and looks very nice that way. I am against those fully cropped dogs that only leave a hole where the ears use to be. Those cuts cause more ear issues than they are "cute".

Way back in the days some dogmen did cut there dogs ears for a certain reason but when alot of people started associating pitbulls with cropped ears most dogmen deceided to stop cropping to draw less attention to there pits. Cruelty is in the eye of the beholder and if done right cropping a dogs ears is not cruel because everyone has there opinions and reasons for doing so. Heres another example using humans I see nowdays that alot of infant babies usually girls get there ears peirced at a very young age like around 1 year old or even less and dont tell me it doesnt hurt cause I seen 4 of my neices get there ears peirced and they screamed and cryed like bloody murder but yet the parents deem the benefits outweigh the pain and the reason for this is so they can wear pretty ormaments on there ear same reason some people like to crop there dogs ears.

For crying out loud people! Read some facts and stop getting caught up in propaganda mags! Back in the old country, England that is! Animals were taxed but if the animal was mammed it could not be taxed. So, the owners cut its ears and did not pay taxes. Ears are good to have for many reasons other than just keeping out dirt. If your dog is an ear sucker he is going to see a bad day with a punisher!

First bait dogs, and now cutting ears for "less to grab onto". If you would listen to the folks on this site who know what they are talking about instead of reading PETA homepage and assuming they know more, you would learn how wrong you really are. If a dog doesnt have an ear to bite, it will simply find a more vulnerable spot. Ears protect your dog if a stray or another dog attacks it because most dogs will go for the ears. Much rather leave the ears there and have them sucked on and punctured and be fine the next day, than cut them, have the other dog go for something else and lose your dog because this stray got hold of his windpipe or chewed off his nose, etc. etc.

  13. Damn 14, you must have some serious "strays" in your part of the woods! Here in New York, any "stray" will have to cross the street if they see my dog walking by...:p

Having ears are a good thing. If you noticed in a lot of Stratton's books, he says that if your opponent has an ear dog, it will fight the ear, and tire himself out, while your dog can go for a leg, or if it's flexible, the neck, or the back end, etc, while the opponent pretty much has a pacifier.

I still don't understand why people will have their dog put under aenesthetic for such a surgery. Every time they put you or your dog under, you take a risk. As with any unneccesary elective surgery it seems the ego of the owner comes before the dogs health. And yes, your EGO is the only reason to get a crop job done as there is no medical reason for this surgery. You like the look....ego, think they look better, ego. THEY DON'T CARE, in fact, if you could ask your dog if it wanted its ears cut off they would most likely say, ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FREAKIN MIND. Nuff said.

Our pup's ears were already cropped when we bought him. I thought I liked cropped ears, but since living w/ my roommates 2 pups whose ears are natural, I wish Jesse's were not cropped, but they are cute anyway.
