hey guys I've got a problem with my dog she is about 18 months old and ive been trying for the last couple of months to get her to play with a hide. I've tried deer and cow hide she doesn't care about tug of war a spring pole or flirt pole. I've played with the other dogs in front of her so she might learn what I am wantin her to do with no luck at all. any suggestions will be great thanks.

some dogs are weird like that, I have one that won't play with one either, but if you give her the hide or a bone, she will chew it. same dog doesn't like to go for walks, but I like her other than that. good luck man

wait wait wait lazy dog? I had a dog that would have nothing to do with play time. I thought the same thing too, that she was lazy, but it just turns out that she was all business. The minute she came upon her first cat it was on and having some fields with rabbits nearby I would just turn her loose and it was literally hours of activity for her.

Another dog I have is equally focused on play activities from hides to balls to whatever whe can tear apart, as well as hunting anything from chickens, to birds to squirels to rats to prarie dogs. Hell I even had one that enjoyed catching those big fat cockroaches that are abundant in the desert, so keep an open mind.

Not saying your dog will be like mine was, just saying keep your eye open for what interests your dog and be versatile in what activities you are willing to engage in with your dog.

Maybe your dog is all business ,likehey that thing is not alive, I'm not stupid I guess you should walk it and exercise it see what it will do ..maybe take it to PLAY with another dog you know that plays and see what you have

Oh she does great on the mill or on walks but as far as rabbits my chickens and wife's cats she shows no interest at all. I may try the chicken broth idea. but I have also not ever turned her off the chain when other animals are around to see if she would snatch em up...

She is already pretty hot for such a young dog. I just figured with her starting to "turn on" she'd want to get to get ahold of a hide or something like that.

try to soaking the hide in water to get it smelling good . then give it 1 to chew on . that may get it to check it out and chew on it . but some won't do anything . but most will if you find out what sets them off .

LOL All those rub tasties on the hide tricks are mostly laughable. Sure, your dog may like the taste of the hide, and have it in his or her mouth because of THAT, but that isn't PLAYING WITH IT, and getting exercise. Liking the taste of something in their mouths is not exercise of any sort.
You've apparently been trying this and pushing for your dog to do this for quite some time. HELLO? The dog doesn't like it. It isn't going to like it.
Your job is not to flog a dog with an exercise you want it to do. Most dogs will do SOMETHING. Your job is to FIND IT. Move on to other things.
It will run the mill? Well damn, run the mill. It will walk? Walk it. Meanwhile move off that insisting it to work something it has shown you it doesn't like for quite awhile, and onto something that proves useful and that it will do with some fervor.
I've seen one instance wehreby it worked to a small degree. The dog was GIVEN the hide. Didn't want to let it go so they had a small tug of war time. If this would ever lead to chasing the hide because it wants that taste, remember that flirt work is a rather free ex. whereby the dog chases it. If you go a long time without it being able to get what it wants on the hide, it will eventually stop chasing it. It will be fruitless to the dog. So even IF that trick worked, it would be 99% probable it is short lived and quite temporary.
Move along and get it the benefit of good exercise in the ways it will do and enjoy without having to mind fuck the dog.

Just find something the dog likes to play with. Every dog is different some may not like hides but will play with ropes, tires, balls, you have to figure out what the dog likes try a variety of things and try to be encouraging and keep it fun and interesting. I have some who will play with everything and some who are selective. Just because a dog won't play with a hide doesn't make the dog lazy. Sometimes you have to build toy drive and there are ways to do that but you will have to be a little more tolerant and creative.
