This is definitely an interesting post.
I have been feeding Hammonds hounds and their crosses for 12+ years.
A person saying they have a "Hammonds" dog is a vague statement, as Gary used a large base to his family he created.
Everyone has their own preference and ideas to what kind of hound they like.
    This is my 2 cents.

    IMO....
I have had some of the tightest/purest Tonka/Red Baron dogs of modern times. As far as working dogs, I think they lost their luster. They aren't what they used to be in the past. But use some with the alligator blood and you are in business. I like 1/4-1/8 or so TRB.
As far as the Hailstone stuff, I have had some I liked and some not so much....depended on the bottom side.
My favorite is the Parkson stuff. Over the years I have had numerous dogs directly out of(10+) and many down from Park. He might not have been the quite performer Hailstone or Tanner was, but he definitely will go down in history as one of Gary's top producers.
I have Race Horse Haynes sister, and his sire, Law, died on my yard. RHH sister is a big deaf knuckle head that is about what you would expect of a line bred alligator dog.
I saw RHH and Delota as young dogs and they were typical looking Park dogs that were slower to mature, like a lot of the inbred alligator stuff can be.
I have had some out of Tanner, that IMO, were as good or better than a lot of hounds.
I have had some out of Dio that were ok, worth feeding, and a couple that were special.
The ones I had out of Ruf Park did not suit me as well as most, but I had a couple that were ok.
I had one out of Zack that was a complete and total psycho (Zackitha) She was half TRB. She was so nuts, she ate her own tail off until there was not even a nub. Then she would bite and work a hold in her own stifle if she got keyed up.
I had several out of Hailstone that were all more high strung, but I didn't care for a few of them. My Midnite dog, (Hailstone x Consewella) was 110% bulldog with drive to push a locomotive.

I have several other lines that I use as outcrosses, but my main love is the alligator dogs.
I like athletic leggy hounds and after breeding my Hammonds hounds for years, I still like what I see. I am seeing high drive, rugged rough, durable, athletic hounds with good natural wind and stamina. Some have good sense and of course some are a brick shy of a load.....but they keep trying the task at hand.

Now, as far as Hammonds crosses go.......
    IMO...
If you have a good representative of a good solid line, I think Hammonds dogs cross well with a lot of different lines. I personally have crossed it with several different line and been pleased with the results. Total packages.

I think Hammonds dogs are a very special line that aren't just for anyone, but for those of us that they appeal to, they is nothing on earth like them.

Thanks for the read Dixie! It's always a pleasure to hear from those who have put the work in to give real feedback on vast amount of the Hammonds' line. Sounds like you done your homework!

  8. I picked up a pup from Mr. Hammonds that is not off of Race Horse but off of Another Snort bred to RHH momma Ruf Gator Girl Francis. He's a great little dog. Below is his liter mate (Ruf Francis Snort). Mine looks like a clone to him. Anyways, Gary H. is a great guy.
