I was working passing out flyers door to door and we saw a pit walking down the street. We were naturally scared of a random pit walking down the street with no collar. He was following us and I finally said "maybe he is nice" I stopped and pet him and he was a lovable dog. I went back to work putting out flyers and he followed me ALL day. Finally at the end of the day I put him in my car and figured I would take him to the vet, see if he has a chip in him. He didnt. I named him Boss. My roomie I JUST moved in with actually happens to have a pit already and they got along great.

He heals on a leash, he listens most of the time, he has chewed a little on a few things such as the couch, a flip flop, a tupperware bowl. He hasnt destroyed anything at all, if he damages anything its barely.

He has pissed in the house one time but thats all. He seems to be potty trained.

I want to start training him. Im teaching him to sit, lay down and come.

I want to teach him to stay, go to his spot, play fetch and speak.

once he has all thay down. I want to get him to protect the house while we are gone. I want him to be able to protect me and anyone with me.

He shows no signs of aggression at all, even when hes playing tug-o-war with the other pit he barely growls

I have only heard him be vocal when I left him outside the first day he was staying there and I left for work and when I put him in the kennel of another dog after I got back home with him from work the day I got him

I dont understand how I would get him to protect if he doesnt know how to be aggressive but I guess he is still young and I havent worked with him a lot.

I know I wrote a lot but I want to do the training myself so it will be like a bonding experience for both of us

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY TIPS, I HAVE NEVER TRAINED A DOG BUT I REALLY AM GOING TO COMMIT MYSELF TO BOSS. VERY EXCITED I GET THE CHANCE

He's probably somebodies pet, a dog off the street isn't likely to get so comfy so soon. I would try to locate the owners, put out some flyers. Just my .02

Whatever you do, don't try to make the dog aggressive towards people, because these dogs shouldn't be.

This comment is what Cajun is referring to. This breed should not be used as a "protector", being used in such a manner is why they have the bad reputation they already have. If you want a guard dog, get a German Shepherd or similar breed that is bred to do protection work.

Amen these are not guard type dogs. There's not worse than a bulldog trained to be aggressive by a novice.

to me it looked like he had been beaten, he used to be so skiddish and scared! like more than just ME said that. A lot of people have... I made sure he didnt have a chip, I walked around with him all day in the area I was in... I mean I felt like the owners would drive up any minute. He also had a dog bite all the way through his ear. I feel like I saved him. I guess I should have just left out details lol wow. I dont want him to be aggressive towards people at all! but if the time ever came then I would want to know he can! lol acting like I just want to make him a bad dog? nah

You should spend more time reading and learning about this breed that you plan on owning. You're trying to correct somebody who I believe has been in these dogs longer than you've been on this earth.

No one is lecturing you, just trying to help you and most that have been around these dogs refer to them as Bulldogs. Now I have/had dogs that I know will protect me if the situation arouse. You said you wanted to do some protection work and the two biggest problems are you know nothing of this dogs genetic background he could come from some very unstable lineage and Bulldog s are/were not bred to be man aggressive. I think the dog belongs to someone and with hell he was running loose could of very easily got into a scrap so please don't make it seem like you saved the dog from a fighting ring and as for the dog being shy you found he wasn't your s so it's natural for the dog to be shy. If your going to act like a expert then use this site and learn something and maybe put up some posters for this dog. Yis Ole Man

ment no disrespect what so ever. I told the vet what happen and he said well he looks like he is yours now Im glad you rescued him. I FEEL like I saved him. it was only a matter of time before he got hit by a car or some other random person picked him up. he wasnt shy what so ever, just nervous around new people, you could tell the way he was acting that someone had beat his ass. Im not a dog expert but I can tell when I dog has been beaten down. now that I have had him around people, started basic training he loves new people. I am taking over ownership? I dont see why its such a bad thing... I feel like he is in heaven now instead of full of ticks and roaming the streets getting attacked by other dogs... hes got a girl friend (the other pit) and a loving home where he doesnt have to worry about getting food and water. I feel like he chose me...I have wanted a pit for a very long time. it was the day AFTER I moved in with my good friend from elementary school and he just so happen to have a pitbull, THEN he follows me all day at work. For hours. he was so tired but he kept up! I mean maybe thats normal to you guys but I have never had a gorgeous dog follow me for hours, I tried to let another old couple who said, they would put him in the back yard, take him... but I walked away and he followed me. he found me for a reason... I DO NOT want him to be a mean dog...seriously? I want the best for him. I just want him to obey... There is nothing goin on here as far as fighting him or doing anything cruel to anyone. What is wrong with wanting a great dog be the protector of my home?

For starters no one is trying to lecture you, just give you some good information. Yes,he possibly was someone's pet,but that person obviously had zero idea on how to properly contain a dog so not overly concerned with that person at the moment. What we are trying to say is,there are many misconceptions and misinformation about this breed, even by people who truly want to do good and even by edjucated people such as vets, really oftentimes haven't got a clue. For one,the dog probably wasn't beaten,I have seen dpgs act that way I know for a fact wasn't because they never left my yard. Another thing we was just wanting to get across was that he is a year old or so,what if he hasn't turned on yet,you CAN NOT afford to leave two bulldogs (pitbull in other words) unattended.Like it or not, they were bred to fight other dogs and it can and will happen at times and if you're either not there or are there and don't know the proper way to break it up,there will be a dead or very injured dog or possibly they both die. 1 year old is a very common age to turn on (become dog aggressive) I've had them do that a lot younger and a little older, every dog is different. Another very important fact is,you do not want a bulldog as a guardian breed, they were not bred for it,most are not good at it and the last thing a person should want is a dog that'll hit a person and absolutely refuse to let go,that's a slippery slope to get on. I do not trust any dog for those decisions, let along a breed that is absolutely not bred for such work. I carry a gun and make those decisions myself. I'm just saying if it were me I would make every attempt to find the original owners but if they are not found, take the advice given by experienced bulldog owners and realize they usually do not get along with other dogs and even if they do right now may not 5 minutes from now, they really don't like doggy friends usually.Don't make a guard dog out of him,it's setting him and you up for failure and learn what you can about the breed and give him a good home.Learn proper containment, learn how to use a break stick and how to break up a dogfight. If you own these dogs for long,it's a skill worthwhile knowing.Other than that, love him and give him a great home, just realize what he is and what he isn't and realize 99% of what the general public tells you to be fact is utter bullshit.

Amen learn learn and learn some more. He doesn't have a girlfriend because he's not HUMAN. Leaving dogs unattended is never a good very bad things can happen love the dog treat him good and have a great life with him. But take heed to what has been said don't put the dog in a situation to fail bulldogs by nature are very loving dogs and will become your best friend in five minutes.

Everything he said is great info. Also don't leave the choke collar on when not working your dog. They can get hung up on kennel, crate, another dogs collar etc. Good luck with your new dog.

one of my 1st pits was a stray he sounds like he will be a good friend and companion. 1st off thou get him spade. 2nd watch him around that bitch. most times male and females get along ok but a fight can still break out. buy a good sturdy collar see if theres a tractor supply or local feed store near by. also buy a parting or breaking stick and read up on using one. nutured my bad lol. also buy a basic pit bull care guide there cheap but will give you somewhat of an idea. good luck.
