What's a good line for a new guy to start with?

    *Line* not like. bah

Any recommendations on lines or specifics to look for in a dog for a new guy starting out. Not wanting to get in over my head but would like to test the waters a bit. Something I can handle but still learn and grow from.

Go for a few rides. See a couple of dog shows and meet SOME of the people there. Hang out, visit, call, text, but don't do anything until you've been exposed to who you can see are the right people. And don't look for lines. Go by the person or persons. Take your time.

Learn as much as you can before you get the dog. It will work out better for you and the dog. And by you being a new guy without any prejudices or inclinations to go a certain way, like TDK said don't line shop. Get out learn and experience the dogs first hand and then decide which line you would like to start with. I know me myself had family members in the dogs and I came into this sport with prejudices against certain bloods because of what older family members said. Plenty of choices and no reason to rush it.

    Sincerely Yours, Cajun

get the dog or pup you want. if you have a bad feeling about purchasing something from a breeder with a good rep trust your instincts and move on.

TDK said it best and I suppose that's what I was meaning when I said don't do it. You don't want to be "line" shopping. Very good advice, TDK.

I think you have to be very honest with yourself and your intentions with the dog. If you are looking for a house pet or conformation show dog then there are many breeders that can help you. I promise you most ''dogmen'' on these forums like to stare at their dogs pedigrees as they eat their Cheerios and imagine what their dog could do. There are other members however that are as real and true as they get as dogmen and woman. Read through the many threads and judge for yourself, learn what you can and as I said what you really want. I myself see nothing wrong with owning one or two of this fine breed as a pet but don't breed for the sake of making a buck or two. I would call Tom G or Gary H or another long time breeder and have a good chat. Either way I wish you the best and hope you do right by this beautiful breed. All the best.

I agree with what most have said, find a purpose first know why your getting the dogs, second expose yourself to as many good folks as you can find, there are several family of dogs quality will vary greatly depending on whose behind the dogs. Which is why line shopping doesn't work in order to pick the best quality from whatever line you choose you first have to know what your looking at. If you jump into this blindsided you will end up with dogs you won't want later on down the line. I see it all the time yards with no direction, people collecting well bred dogs without knowing which direction to breed them or if they are even an asset to a program. Take your time no need to rush the more exposure you have to the breed over a period of time the easier it is to find some clear direction. Best of luck to you.

I understand the "the don't do it " part, lol These dogs are time consuming but they are nice dogs,so go ahead. Like was said,go to some shows, meet people, get to know some more and then start to make a decision as to the direction you're headed. Lines mean very little,to many generalizations, really. I like a good dog, don't care what it is,but it better be good. After you meet some people and their dogs, find a dog out of a breeding that you like the parents and hope for the best. All I can really tell you.
