Generally, a high quality, 1.5-2 inch, 3 ply collar works the best. They are available from numerous place, and often aren't all that expensive.

www.blockydogs.com They have excellant collars (As I hear, never acually bought one), but they are quite expensive.

For walking, I usually use a standard buckle collar. Harnesses seem to encourage (my dogs) to pull, and I have no use for training collars.

You beat me to it, GSD! I love the blocky collars, especially the martingale type. Have never had a problem with them -- no snapped buckles, no fraying of the nylon webbing. The martingale ring also makes a great handle when the dogs are being stubborn. ;) :D

If you are just talking about walking the dogs a 2-3 ply minimum 1.5-2'' collar with secure heavy duty hardware will work fine. Dont ever trust plastic buckles or cheap metal fastners. I actually get my collars from the local ag store which are "cow collars" apprx. 2'' wide, nice and thick, dont stretch or rot as much as other leather collars and look very good. This is ONLY for walking purposes, when on a tie-out they are on nylon collars as I dont trust leather (albeit I've had these collars for some time and besides the initial stretching for the first week) . Harnesses have their purpose but if all you intend to do is walk the dog a wide collar is ideal. BTW-run a search for "Collars" on the forum and you will find much feedback!

Are blocky dog collars safe for walking?

My cousin has one for his Presa, and I'd sure say so. He has the standard BD collar, nothing fancy, but its great quality.

The martingale blocky collar is great for walking -- he can't get out of it because when he pulls, the loop tightens up. Also, the hardware is heavy-duty metal, so no breaking of parts.

If you are like me you like things to be functional as well as fancy, here is a link for some great collars that are made to stand the tests of time-
