Salt Water Aquariums

Anyone here have a salt water aquarium? I'm doing some research to start up a reef tank. Could definitely use some tips/suggestions/experiences.

Cental & South American Fresh Water Cichlids here. Alays wanted to do the transition but never did. Alot like hydro though, with the Ph levels and all. Ask Laced I know he's pretty good with tanks.

 

my initial desires were to get an Ambilobe Panther Chameleon, but after doing some research I think i'd be better off with a tank. Those Chameleons are expensive, plus apparently i have to feed it roaches and i'm not about to consciously bring that shit into my house lol

 

I got into tanks a little after I got dogs and let me tell you both are a handfull of money waiting to be spent. Especially saltwater setups. I thought I was doing it buying $20-$30 fish a wk. Then I seen what some of my boys were spending on their tanks and I FELL BACK LOL. My tank is full of savs now, it's literally survival of the fittest in there.

 

i do freshwater only sorry. but, if in the future you need any tips about fresh water fish, especially bettas i could give you a few pointers.

 

..i done the same as mudville monster...was breeding african+other chichleds ...discus/etc..friend had reef tanks..salt/protein skimmers/etc/etc..in can cost a lot off $$$$ to get right so start on cheap fish first ...or brackish water fish to mature the tank for a few weeks..where you are(usa)the choices are great,, some african lake fish have colors that some can rival marine with out the problem of salt/etc/etc......g-luck

 

Always did freshwater. Cichlids to some exotic freshwater. Here is a pic of an exotic I had. I wish I still had him.


Can you folks guess what kind fish it is?

BTW in that pic it was 12" long. Beast of a fish.

thanks kid, i'm alright, second hand info doesn't do me much good. I appreciate the offer. I need Laced to pop in here and share the knowledge. I have a friend with a freshwater tank that's whats kind of got me into this. I stop by aquarium shops and i'm just mesmerized by these tropical fish. Sounds like it would be pretty legit to come home everyday to my own little tropical paradise and just watch em swim and float around. Sounds relaxing.

i would like to have something like this overtime. I know it will be an on-going process

 

BK that setup right there needs a lot much attention. Your water has to be on point or your corals & invertebrates will not thrive. The fact that saltwater setups need a lot of attention is why I don't do them. Don't get me wrong though, it is a very rewarding hobby when done correctly.

that's exactly why i want it. lol i never pick an easy path. I just grabbed a photo from a local saltwater fb group. But, yea i wouldn't have even known there was an issue with the water. I'm excited about learning. There is a local aquarium club that has monthly meetings, next meeting they are doing a saltwater set up start to finish so i'm definitely going to check it out and get some more info.

I have several freshwater tanks..got out of salt a cpl yrs ago. If I were you I would look into getting a nano/coralife biocube set up to start with. Kinda plug in play ya know.

 

True moe, but if she wants to go reef, 4get about it. With reef systems the bigger the tank, the easier it is..... patience is key with any kind of salt tank.

Buy the biggest tank you can afford --- then wish you had a bigger one ... LOL !!! I'd go for a big tank and Africans: Lake Malawi ans Tanganyika's ... Beautiful colors and lots of shapes and sizes + they live longer and breed like rabbits - moth brooders !!!
