It's that time of year and I was wondering how many others play in the dirt. I've always bee into natur and living off the land. The older I get the more I try to live of the fat of the land and make myself & family more self sufficient. It's.ot as big as it has been or will be but here is my garden so far for this yr. Anyone else?

I wanted to have one started this year man but I don't have a tiller for the lawn tractor yet. I want a decent size plot next year for sure. What are you growing?

So far not much. First pic is three different types of tomatoes. Husky Red Cherries, Early Girls & a new drought tolerant hybrid just in case the other two don't fair so well with the conditions this yr. With them is some Red Romaine lettuce.

Next pic is a mix of things that were bought or started late and weren't ready for transplant. A Sumnter Cucumber plant, 2 Green Bell Pepper, cilantro and a mango tree started and gifted by Mop Master. Plus a bunch of seedlings in those square pots.

Third pic is a Jalapeno, Bell Pepper, Cucumber, and 3 Snap Pea plants that the birds keep jacking me on....lol. I have some morr stuff I want to add and should be doing it shortly. Some more pepper plants and some fruits. Maybe strawberries and some Melons. %100 Organic using compost teas as sprays and ferts.

Just got the spot picked out for the raised bed garden - tilling this week. Maybe an 1/8 acre ? Tomatoes (all Heirlooms), pole beans, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, --- waiting to see what other seeds come up healthy in peat pots. Grandsons want giant pumpkin-LOL ! Onions, herbs, lettuce?

That's what I'm talking about Olddog. I had a spot all picked out to raise up and fill.with fresh soil. But $ was tight so I went with some container gardening instead of the square foot method. I have a couple Zuccini plants that weren't shown and had a crook neck squash but it died. I hope to get that spot filled as that is where the melons were going. Honey dew, cantaloupe and Red Baby watermelon. Maybe some pumpkins for the kids too.

Tried potatoes but they were all small. Not good with those yet or onions. need more herbs for cooming though, thanks for the reminder.

Have four raised beds 12'x12', About ten large pots for carrots and potatoes(easier to harvest)tomatoes mostly roma, green zebra and cherry(yellow red and purple and orange ),zucchini, cucumbers(for pickles), two types of kale, garlic, parsley, cilantro, dill, rosemary and basil(in the flower beds) strawberries, squash, and peppers hot chillies as well. We try to get lettuce and spinach every year but it seems to get too hot too fast. Clearing a 1/4 acre for corn and more of the same. Homegrown tastes the best and last longer-we also freeze and do a bunch of canning-been thinking about building a root cellar but who knows. I also plant some turnips and chickory and some other stuff for the deer and turkey. We are loyal but it takes toil to benefit from the soil, but we love it. One of my favorite things is fresh cucumber sliced, red onion sliced and cherry tomatoes cut in half, soak the onions for half hour in lime juice then all gets thrown into a bowl and covered with any vinnagrete let soak an hour or so and serve with some feta crumbled on top. A few years ago we grew a few water melons(smaller variety)and my wife found a recipe for a watermelon salad red onions soaked in lime juice at least an hour and feta cheese, i know it sounds really f-ed up but that is delicious summer food for sure.

    Actually it sounds damn good.

REDWAR that's what Im talking about. You have a few things I want to try out, potatoes, garlic, onions, I need more experience with. I had some pickling cucumbers but my dog ate it....lol. Sumnter's are finally coming in as well as the new hybrid tomatoe, and red romaine. We've had a couple salads with the romaine so far but I'm waiting for that first all fresh salad.

We mainly chop down and freeze what we don't use or give away. Looking into canning and pickling. I should have listened and learned when I was younger.
