Hey yall I'm new to the site. I was wondering what yall thought of the American bulldog. In my case he would be a family dog I would like a protector for my family and home when I'm not home and I would probably get into some weight pulling with him. I'm really liking the Johnson type of bulldog.

If you want more of an athletic dog, go more toward the standard type

The only way to know is to do the research your self no one can tell you what you will like ..I recommend u look up a few kennels. Preferably working kennels ..but again it depends on you and how much knowledge u have or are willing to acquire for that particular breed hell u might prefer a standard poodle some of them might make a fine gaurd dog just give em a Mohawk

Well I had one years back, we took him in from a lady we knew that wanted him gone because he kept killing her chickens. Since we got him at about 3-4 years old I'm not exactly sure what kind of life he lives prior to me but let me tell you..... That was the craziest dam dog I've ever owned. He was smart enough to know a child when he saw one but if your ass was over 5ft tall and on our property I'd better be walking with you! I'm sure not all are as aggressive as he was and like I said I don't know if he had lived the type of life to give him reason to hate people the way he did or not but I don't think I'd want a dog like him at this point in life.

Sounds good I just have to find a breeder. I am trying to stay pretty local so my options seem to be limited

Had one for 11 years best dog ever came from a kennel that showed, did weight pull, shutzhund everything their cousins to the pitty so some have high prey drive. Loved all kids but no adutls better come around uninvited. If you raise, socalize and whatever it takes to make that dog a good dog you will have the best friend in the world for you and your family.

Awesome.. Good with kids is a must. Adults had just better pay attention to the sign on the fence lol

I had a NKC j-type. Some of the better know kennels a few yrs back for weight pull was mountain gator kennels in colorado was known for pulling. Mine had some MGK blood and Something Special blood. I gave him to a close friend and he is exactly like what Cajun said if he don't know you he don't like you, get to close to someone he knows you getting bit. You lean more towards johnson an you will see more protection type if you lean more towards hunt and catch work you see the scott type. Hines stuff was a nice combo. Check out ed berrara and konfederate kennels too.

  11. Bullpull kennels that you linked have some nice looking dogs. I have a 7 month old American bulldog from Walkers in GA. He is a great dog, and is already showing lots of protection instinct and very territorial.

Here is his ped ( he is about 4 months old in that pic)

Scott, Hines and Painter would be my choice. I think the Johnson dogs are just way too bulky.

Why not go to an American Bulldog site to find what you're looking for?

Check out chimera kennels dogs, they seem ligit and cross different breeds creating they type you might be looking for...
Plenty of benifits from getting a type, multiple breeds loosens the gene pool which can only help the health and longevity of the dog and having different genes to issolate desired genes from and breed for...
As far as protection dogs of the mollaser type, Chimeras bulldogs seem nice and I would rather have one from Chimera than any american bulldog, preso, fila, mastiff etcc... they seem to not be too big which also helps the longevity of your relationship... good Luck and seek out the very best from someone who breeds for an objective and not just to breed...

Good suggestion ELIAS'PISTOLA I have admired those dogs for a while and they seem to really select for healthy, sound temperament animals. That would be my choice if a wanted a bull or mastiff type guard dog.

They are Definetly protection type dogs though, I kept mine on the chain but my grandma would let mine in the house of a morning when she left for work and he would guard me while I slept, I'd wake up and he'd be standing at attention right beside my bed lol. If your in a rural area I'd say by all means go for it but I'd be careful if you live in the city and have a good chance of the dog seeing strangers on the regular

You need to check these people out. I thought about getting one of their dogs a few years back for a service dog - couldn't pull it off - but love their dogs - the real deal working bred.

Not sure where you are from but check out Gunslinger Kennels. They have hard working protection dogs. I looked at them some time back and almost bought one. I had a litter on the ground here so it would have been too many puppies.

They work their dogs and they breed the dogs they work. Located in NC. If I were to the AB route that would be my choice. S
