While yes I will be one of the first to admit you can learn a lot reading, online forums and asking questions there are some things you just got to see first hand.

I would like to invite anyone who wishes to share to share with everyone something they learned first hand early on and left a lasting impression.

For me it was seeing a man I have a very high amount of respect for get down and softly calm his dog and talk him through a very hard pull only to come out with a win.

I was blown away and swear I was watching it in slow motion, truly it really was remarkable to me and I was just amazed to see what a difference this soft encouragement made and how it eventually turned the whole contest around.

This man taught me so much afterward on his thoughts on it and how he went about such a bond and how he felt it was one of the most important parts of the game. To this day I can remember it all as if I had only just watched it and it is something I have always sought strongly in establishing with my own dogs.

Off topic...but same subject...my buddy had a female that won three. All RIP in :50 or less. A number of others fell by the way side. If he walked away from her she would let up and look for him. All of our camp believed she would quit without him. During the same time we campaigned Ch. Charlie. You could drop him off and just come back in an hour. He was a machine.

So what I learned from him is the fact no two dogs are the same. There is no cookie cutter plan that fits every dog. I learned early on to adjust to each dog, keep the standards high, and listen to the dog.

    Great read!!!
Although I have nothing to share, I cant agree more about " the bond" being the determining factor in a long race...
A mentor once told me they know when you dont care for them and Ive seen it time and time agian...

Once agian Slim I value your post...

I raised the DSK " Smoking Joe" dog from 6 weeks old to 16 months. I talked him to his feet at the 2:20 mark to complete his last go across. Don't ever think for a moment that a dog doesn't know you're there when they need you most.

I've always been a believer in a man made dog (Thats what I call a dog like your refering to Chuval) . I know many dogs will work for anyone and like most I do believe gameness is either there or its not regardless of who's the handler but..... I've seen it also with more than one dog that while it will work no matter who is handling some will just work harder for the person who owns and raises them than they will for a total stranger. My mutt little miss geach is like this. She's going hard for whoever is handling her but My voice will motivate her more than any others will just as she listens to no other person other than me. I'm not a betting man typically but I would bet that if she was ever even thinking of quiting my voice would pull one more scratch out of her, shes never continplated it so I'm not 100% on that but I've talked more than just one from off its back simply by the sound of my voice. I've always believed it to be the reason 2 handlers fought for position in the box. Cut them off from their dogs view and it might just not want to be there anymore.

I do agree about the title of this thread, there are some things you just can't learn or fully understand unless your in the mix and doing in hands on. I can tell you what a cold dog looks like all day long however you will never fully understand it until you've seen it first hand. The same thing with gameness. Good topic.

Good read AGk..The ol mentor stated hes always behind the other dog and always keeping eye contact with his dog...
He felt that they were tag teaming thier oppenet to the point his dog worked the front and he worked the back...
Cutting view sounds good but most lack the connection to thier dog, but if the dog has it, its very strategic...

Ive heard of reversese minuplation, in which they were jingling car keys during the scartch trying to get the dog to detour as if the job was done... would have worked if it was the owner and his keys...

A firm believer that whom conditions should handle because of that work bond, and if you raised the dog your in a better buisness...

It really is a bond unto itself and unless someone has had this or seen it first hand in the flesh you really cannot understand it. The change you can witness take place really is amazing. Good post AGK

Never made that breeding happen, brother. I lost more good dogs because of poor choices of women than you could imagine. I was always better at picking dogs than women it turned out. Lol

Now that I can imagine is truly a beautiful thing. An incredible bond. All they want is to hear your chant thats been firing them up since a pup. Thats what I would call the true bond...man..u gotta real friend then.

This is why I like coming on here....great post and comments from the GD community.
    Nice thread Chuva...

Watching Fat Bill scrambling out of a chain spot with water buckets swinging in his hands trying not to get eaten alive. When a man tells you watch out that dog bites, believe him. No matter how many dogs you've been around in your life lol.

Something you just cant read is how to incourage your dog to reach down deep, trying to stay in front of his eyes, how not to get beat in the wash tub, how to take one as an individual when conditioning and get him to peak at the right time! You can follow A keep to the letter, but very few will condition the same, I'm not good at writing I guess you just have to be tuned into what each one needs! I like working with them on the rub table after A good workout!

I remember also using a break stick for the first time lol. Was not one of my better moments and as I was getting heckled lol I remember the dog looking at me as though he to was embarrassed by me. It took me a good few times before I got the hang of it and when I did get it, I GOT IT but that first time was a show in itself.

Knowing how and what teachers are needed for school. Don't want to ruin one too early by giving them a hard as nails teacher.

That is an excellent point. I know more then one person ruin a hound this way. Again it's all about knowing every dog on your yard.
