My girl has been in heat for a couple of weeks and during that time, my boy has stayed with my parents. Today, my dad comes over while I'm taking a shower and I come out to see that he brought my boy over and when I see them in the back yard they're stuck like they just did it. My girl isn't even one year old and I don't know what i can do. Does this mean that she is gonna be pregnant or is there still a chance that she won't be? I realy didn't want her to get pregnant and I actually was gonna get her fixed once she was not in heat, but now I don't know. You guys know any thing i could do?

my two did that, my vet gave her a shot that would work like a morning after pill, but you have to catch it within 24 hours, but after she got the shot she stayed in heat for about 2 months so you will have to keep her put up for a while

If they only hooked up once chances are decent that she is not pregnant. There is an "abortion" shot, but from what I hear the side-effects are worse than having the litter of pups. Of course this wasnt with a 12 month old pup either, so maybe in your case it is the thing to do. I'm sure someone will be able to shed some more light on the issue than I can.

Just take her and have her spayed after she is out of heat...they remove the uterus anyway. You said you planned on having her spayed anyway...simple answer just have her spayed.

You cannot spay a dog that is possibly pregnant/ in heat can you Tabdogs?

It is safe to spay a pregant dog early in the pregnancy(like with this instance). A dog that has just came out of heat can be spayed BUT it makes the sugery more complicated being that the uterus is full of blood and swollen. Most vets will charge more for a pregnant dog. I would take her to a spay/nueter clinic. It usally runs cheaper and all they do is spays and neuters. And im sure they have done their fair share of spaying pregnant females..lol

my best guess is go to the vet

  9. my girl had the shot Dec 8th and she is still in heat now so that is a draw back for the shot so if you want her fixed anyways take her to your vet asap you can have her fixed when she is in heat but it may cost more some vets choose not to do it when in heat but will do it for a price

I had a very similar experience. Krystal went in Heat Nov-17TH and stayed in Heat until Dec-6TH. I watched her diligantly always when she was let out back on her tie out. I mean flashlight at nite- her every move. On day 20 I let my guard down and while getting ready for work about 12 minutes went by and I looked out back and a Bull Mastiff had her nailed. They weren't locked though as I ran out back yelling Oh No and they parted, I heard a yelp from one of them. She came back in the house and I sat down in our recliner and she threw a fit (Mad at me) hunkering down and barking in anger. Although I was very upset It was funny as hell as I broke up her first love session. I immediatly called the vet and he said they weren't together long enough. I took her to the vet 3 days later for all her shots and then had to wait 10 days to get her Spayed. She was Spayer on the 20th and is doing well. Getting back to her old self as Forum members had told me. I just ordered a nice Digital camera so I hope to have some pictures of my baby soon to post. Well its kind of a long reply and 2:30AM and I have to go back to work in about 5hrs, so take care all. Joel.

    Thanks for your help guys.

I'm gonna call the vet tomorrow and see if he'll do it while she's still in heat.

  12. Although it is not the suggested or prefered method of breeding...as long as your girl is 100% healthy, nothing bad will happen to your girl becuase she is only 12 months. Of course, on planned breedings, you want them to be older, with full immune systems, developed bodies, and for alot of people, old enough to have proven themselves worthy of breeding. I have a friend who's female DELIVERED at 10 months old! She was perfectly fine, recovered very quickly, and all 8 pups are doing GREAT. So, I think your fears are not needed, unless your female has health issues. If you didn't want puppies to begin with, you could get an "abortion shot" if not too late, or cull the entire litter. Dont be that guy giving away pups to the first people who take them off your hands......you'll end up with dogs YOU produced.....abandoned, abused, mal-nourished, mis-treated, dumped in the alley, or in the news.....*PITBULL ATTACKS!*

thing is, I wanted to get her fixed anyway. She has some serious fear issues with things. With just moving the metal waterbowl across the cement, she gets scared of the scraping noise it makes. She has never snapped or anything like that, but she just usually goes to her corner or somewhere else that she can hide.

She also has a heart murmur that we found out about a couple of months ago. That's why I don't want to breed her other than the fact I know nothing about it.

An "abortion shot" (estrogen) can be effective for up to 3 days after mating, but there is a danger of serious side effects. Most vets won't even do it anymore. I'm with Tab, if you were going to spay your dog anyway, now would be a good time.

Why even suggest alternative methods to spaying...They want to have to the dog spayed..which is a GREAT idea..and now is the best time. I dont care who had a healthy litter at 10 months, that is just sickning...and irresponsible. injecting a dog with hormones is dangerous period. The "abortion" shot is just that hormones. If you dont want any pups simply spay the dog...

I agree with TabDogs, the best thing to do is to go and get her spayed. Good luck with everything. ---puregame

  18. It's obvious that is the best idea....NO SH__! But he is here for advice on every possible angle...so LET PEOPLE GIVE IT! If he decides...for WHATEVER reason NOT to spay, than at least he might know that his girl isn't going to DIE because she's "only" 1 year old.....14 months when she whelps. Try to remember...that this is a FORUM....not a "come and listen to one man's advice site."

No one said it was a "one man advice forum" ...but there is no need to put the idea in this persons head of the dog being " perfectly fine" to whelp a litter at 14 months old . that is far from the truth. Not to mention the person already has said the dog has health issues. NO dog has any business being bred at 14 months period. Their body is not at the maturaity level of an adult nor is its physical state that of an adult. The immune system is far from being mature. Would you let your 7 year old child have a baby? i doubt it..
